Very uplifting knowing the "dime saved/dollar earned" formula. Each time I get tired and start to think about slowing down or get depressed, I stop and think how this will increase my net worth and financial independence. This is a very powerful psychological driving force.

My wife and I are in the planning stages for an ICF home in rural Platte County. The county uses the 2006 IRC and doesn't require a person to have a GC license to pull a building permit. They are also temporarily waiving the fees for the permit, which for the ~2,500 sq.ft. house we are planning will save $1,000 right up front. We have a good idea of the size and shape we want the home to be, but would like advice about architects or designers who are comfortable with ICFs. We will be at the KC spring home show this weekend [we currently live in Iowa].

My wife has landed a job on the Kansas side and will start in April. I need to do the planning for the new house while getting my current home sold. Any advice is appreciated! I've read several of the books in "The Whole Enchilada" set and read a boatload of the posts on the forums. I know enough to realize that I've got a lot to learn and could use help from those who have already gone through the process, esp. those in the KC area familiar with local architects, subs and suppliers.

When you are at the home show, look for the Amvic ICF display. I don't know if they will be there or not, as I haven't been in several years. If they are there, talk to Bob Barker (yeah, not the Price is Right, but same name) and tell him that Ken from Lees Summit said he is happy with his Amvic house. He knows who I am; I haven't talked to him in a while though. Depending on how recent they have updated their flyer, you might see my house on that glossy Amvic handout ;-). Note that Bob is an Amvic supplier (not a subcontractor or installer), but he can get you in the door at of the commercial construction supply houses that carry Amvic and open their entire inventory to you. I used this lead to capitalize on Contractor Appreciation Days at various suppliers, where I met tons of potential subcontractors.

I also sent you a PM with some additional information, including a local architect familiar with the design and construction nuances of ICF construction.

Ken, thanks for your reply. I've read all 935 of your posts and am blown away by your scope of knowledge in these forums. I am in the area for the next several days and would like to contact your architect soon. I have spoken with Bob Barker, but neither Amvic or Carter-Waters will be at the home show this year... a reflection of the economy? They invited me to come to the showroom just a few blocks away and I probably will.

The home show seems to be more about remodeling and landscaping in the past couple of years. I know when I went the first time, I dropped like 30+ sets of plans to potential subcontractors and suppliers. The value I got from this exercise was great. The next year, it was starting to transition (although it was pretty cool to see my house featured by several of the subs that had worked on my house, and the subs that didn't get the jobs saw these features as well). The year following, the value for an O-B was very noticeable.

Anyway, good luck. I would definitely go over to Carter-Waters.
