Hi, I was wondering what would be a "good deal" type of price on granite countertops. I've come upon some prices and don't know if I'd be paying too much or the exact price or if it's a good deal. I'm in Texas and I know prices fluctuate depending on where everyone is located but how much did you pay for, say, your bathroom countertops and your kitchen?

The only way to get relevant prices is to get estimates from people in your area. The prices will vary according to the type of edging, number of holes, special shapes, square footage, number of seams, type of granite and what the fabricator/installer thinks his work is worth.

If you do not have your base cabinets made or picked out, you might be able to save money on countertops by getting tops that were pre-manufactured out of the country to standard sizes. I found one place online, where you could buy finished countertops made in China, with the granite coming from China, India, and Brazil, and the countertops were only $2.50 to $5 per square foot. Before you get too excited, there is one stipulation that dampens one's enthusiasm - you have to buy by the cargo container full. A great deal for a contractor building a housing tract, but not so good for the owner-builder.

There are also places geared toward the do it yourselfer. doityourselfgranite.com is one that comes to mind.

Terry thanks, I have done some research and just as you mentioned I found that the pre-manufactured will be the way to go for the vanities. I found two companies; Home Depot's Pegasus brand and a company by the name of stonebynature. Has anyone used them before? Prices are decent but I would like reviews if anyone's got them.

Thanks,
Miriam

Many tile stores in Houston carry pre-fab 2 cm granite "blanks" with two bullnosed edges. These are "standard" kitchen-counter depth and 8-9 feet in length. Prices range generally from $200-$300 each. A lot of budget granite installers use these instead of fabricating from the slab. Prices are good, but you may have more seams.

We used a Pegasus granite vanity countertop in our last house. It comes with a back/side splash that you can also mount if you want to. It was easy to mount (with silicone adhesive caulk), and required no maintenance.
