Has anyone had any experience using soy-based open-cell polyurethane foam insulation? I recently ran across this in the course of my research. They claim that it is similar in properties to Icynene, but much less costly. Websites promoting this tout an installed cost of roughly twice that of fiberglass. This is substantially less than what I have heard mentioned for Icynene, and not bad when you factor in reduced air infiltration, mold resistance, etc...

I would like to use a blown-in insulation under my roof deck on an ICF house and go with the ventless attic, however, I want to be able to do this cost effectively. Closed-cell petroleum-based foam insulation, which I also investigated is priced competitively but requires a 15-minute fire barrier (such as 1/2" sheetrock) to pass most code, so that kind of ruled that out.

Some websites on this stuff:

ecosmartinc.com

biobased.net

Does anyone else know of any other alternative blown insulation materials?

Please post back here if you learn anything - I'm a week or so from installing Icynene, but would like to see the bio stuff. I've contacted the manufacturers three times over the past 10 weeks and they won't return phone calls or emails, so I'm already starting to write them off.

John,

I inquired by email to BioBased and they got back to me in less than a day, and a day later I received an email from their closest dealer in my area promising to call after the weekend. They seemed glad that I was still in the design stage and want to talk. Sounds like they are hungry for the business. I'll follow on with another post after I have the chance to talk with them.

Do a search using the advanced search at FHB's Breaktime (taunton.com). Insulation of all kinds there is discussed at incredible length and with great passion. Don't even think of posting your question there unless you've searched the archives and done a fair bit of reading, or you will likely get berated.

BioBased has improved a lot in 6 months!

I called today and immediately got the number of an installer in my area. Had a walk-through today and should be getting a bid in the next couple of days. The installer only started the bio-based foam four months ago, so we'll need to check out some previous jobs.
