Quick question... should laminate flooring be put down before the finish carpenter begins trim work?

Thanks.

I am a trim carpenter. I would say no.  The only time I would say yes is when you want the baseboards put right on top of the flooring. It gives a very clean look, although the floors are rarely flat enough to make this look work.

Geoff,

My husband agrees with you regarding when the flooring should be put down. His reason for waiting for the trim before installing the floor is in anticipation of repairs that may be needed down the line. He says that butting the flooring against the baseboard rather than under the baseboard reduces cost and better maintains the look of the wall since the only thing that has to be ripped out during a repair is the quarter-round as opposed to ripping out the baseboard that is attached to the drywall and all the potential issues with that. Plus, it is much easier to find matching quarter-round than it is matching baseboard.

What do you think?

Leslie

Baseboard goes after hardwood floors, tile floors, and laminate floors, but before carpet. I wouldn't want to laminate to a baseboard and chance seeing space between the laminate and baseboard.

Jon, thanks for your replies to this thread, as I've been trying to follow it. We've done some laminate before, and will do it in our new construction too. I couldn't understand the theory for doing baseboard before the laminate. The baseboard gave us that little bit of space above the laminate that created a seam to cover our laminate cuts. It looked great, was efficient, and had a very "finished" look in the end.

In my opinion, if you do the baseboards first you will need to use quarter-round next to the baseboard to cover edge gaps that are required when laying laminate.
