I spent hours and hours on the website and I know it saved me many thousands of dollars and just as many headaches. I'm extremely proud of my house and have already been asked to put it in a home show. I estimate that I have amassed at least $175,000 equity for my efforts.

Where are the garage slab and other small slabs outside doorways usually budgeted? Are those considered part of the foundation?

I usually include them in the big foundation number that I turn into the bank for construction financing. However they are considerably cheaper that the house foundation.

I would suggest if you can't get a detailed bid to figure the cost at 4X your concrete cost. So a 3x3 "stoop" outside a door requires 9 s.f. of concrete, at 4 inches thick. Thats 3 cubic feet of concrete, or 1/9 of a yard. Don't forget to figure in footings and toedowns if required. If your garage is attached I would calculate it at same rate as house and take the overage as a built-in contingency considering how concrete costs have gone up so much.

Here is a spreadsheet I used to calculate a lot of my Concrete & Gravel requirements.  This isn't perfect, but gives you a good feel.  Things not included (likely not an Exclusive list):

1)  If there is a 'extra' charge for Partial Concrete loads

2)  Any different delivery prices for Front vs Rear Concrete trucks

3) Concrete Pump trucks if needed (which unfortunately I did for another $2,000 for various jobs)

4)  LABOR.. .THIS IS CONCRETE MATERIAL ONLY

5) Re-Bar, WireMesh, etc...

Sorry... should have had this in above...

The 'shaded' yellow cells were my input cells.

The Basement & Garge square feet were straight from my House PLans.. so no calculation of square feet.  This was the 'interior' square feet vs the exterior walls.

I spoke with several contractors locally. Most of them said the garage and door stoops are separate from the foundation estimate.

One went on to say they pour the foundation then backfill for the garage slab pour then pour the stoops/patios/walkways after the major build is complete.

Hope this helps.

Kevin,

I just downloaded your estimator spreadsheet.  It looks like a nice tool.  I'm not a spreadsheet expert and was a little confused by the gravel section.  I think it had a total cost of $74,000.  Is there something I'm missing or not understanding?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

You didn't miss anything or not understand... I apparantly missed something!  I had a formula wrong on this spreadsheet.  I am attaching an edited version.

I had used a different version for my own spreadsheet & cut & pasted, and I guess messed up a formula in the process.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Kevin
