We have purchased some land that would require about a 1/4 mile driveway.  Does anyone have any suggestions on blacktop vs. Gravel?  Do I need to run the gas line from the street before I put in the driveway?  Do I wait to get the exact area for the house before I run the driveway?  I need some suggestions to get me going.  Any input would be appreciated.

Hi Bob!

Congratulations on your land!

Our land is about almost 1,000 feet long. We decided to stick with gravel, at least until we get the house finished. (We have owned the land for six years and just started building this May.)

A friend of ours was going to cut in our driveway for us but quickly realized the project was bigger than he thought, so we hired an excavator. This guy cut in the driveway and laid the water line, gas, and an extra conduit (so we could run electricity to the end of the drive later on if we wanted) filled everything back up and laid the gravel for a nice fee. It was worth it to us for him to do everything and get us past this point. Don't know if you've talked to any excavators, but that is where I would start and see what they are willing to do!

I've attached a picture of ours.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the photo, your drive looks as long as our drive would need to be.  I was thinking of running the gas, and electric, and phone along, or under the drive, but I am not exactly sure where we will put the house yet.  Can or should they just run plumbing for these utilities, and we can hook them up later?  Or should we rent a trench digger later and put them in.  It would be really nice to have it all done.  I will have to call or find some excavators.  I hope to put a pole barn in after the driveway.
