I am currently buying tile for my master bath and want to go with marble for the shower walls, but don't think it will be a good choice for the shower floor. I know that marble is hard to keep clean even if you seal it. My shower is 4'x6' with two shower heads. I am wanting to use a mosaic porcelain for the shower floor because I think it will be easier to keep clean. Do any of you have marble or have you mixed different stones together? Thanks for any input.

We used large marble tiles 18x12 on our counters. The backsplash is 1" mosaic ceramic and glass with some larger metallic tile accents. We like the result.

For the master bath, we use a red marble tile on the counter, red clay saltillo on the floor and a deep reddish brown ceramic tile in the shower, accented with marble listellos.

Don't be afraid to mix and match.  Be sure to use small tiles on your shower pan so that you can conform to the slope of the pan to get good drainage.

Thanks, Michael. The walls are 12"x12" marble and the shower floor is 2"x2" porcelain on a mesh backing. I had heard about a lot of etching problems with marble tile and was concerned about that. I am also using the marble tile on the floor, but I have a floor polisher that should keep it in good shape. I would love to see some pictures of yours if you can post them.

A few things to consider... the lighter the color of the grout, the harder it is to keep it looking new. Polished marble is slippery. For safety reasons, make sure the size of your shower floor tiles are smaller so that your feet/toes have something to grip. I like larger size tiles on the shower wall and smaller ones on the floor. If you have a shower shelf built in between the wall studs, I like using one piece for the shelf (a slab piece) vs. several tiles. ...Susan

Tumbled "river rock" and ceramic tile.
I can't comment on how easy it is to clean yet...
Note, we're not 100% with grout - so you might see it missing at the top.

dcg, that's an interesting look with the river rock. I guess they're small enough that they feel good under foot?

I was very worried about that also - the rock was my wife's idea.
The shower floor gets lots of compliments.  No problems with my feet... I was actually a bit surprised.  Just don't use small rocks that have lots of vertical height differences.

Be aware marble tile is porous and can easily be stained by liquids left standing on it.  If you go with marble, be sure to use a white vinyl modified thinset to avoid staining and to give it proper support.  The other thing you need to be aware of is that marble is relatively soft.  This means if you are regularly scrubbing it it will lose its luster fairly quickly.  Mixing marble with other types of tile should not be a problem, provided you are using the thinset above for all of it.
