We visited our friends' new home that they are moving into. They are owner-builders, and told us that before we did anything else, we had to go buy this book and join the O-B community. So here we are.

What do the gurus here think about polyurethane ICF blocks?  I have always wondered why all ICFs are EPS since PU is stronger and has higher insulation value.  Finally found a company doing PU blocks.

I don't necessarily think this EPS vs. Polyurethane is the biggest issue of ICF.  This isn't the first ICF to use polyurethane, just the latest.  In the realm of ICF, I have only known a handful to use polyurethane, and this one happens to be the only manufacturer at this point.

My concerns are with the post and beam construction.  The code book treats these differently than flatwall ICF, be sure you are OK with this when you make your selection.  The biggest problem I have with post and beam style ICF is the lintels, and simply getting enough steel and concrete in there to support large openings.  Also where you put your doors, height of the windows, etc. all has greater impact on the block itself than flatwall ICF.

And lastly with this block, how exactly are the trades following the ICF going to like it?  How and where is your sheetrocker going to attach sheetrock, there doesn't appear to be webs they can screw into?  How is your kitchen cabinet installer going to install wall cabinets?  What are they screwing into, foam?  How is your trim carpenter going to attach trim and crown mold?  How is your siding contractor going to attach exterior finish?  These trades don't take kindly to nailing or screwing to foam, those fasteners don't have much pullout capacity in the polyurethane.

And then, most ICF use is regional.  People use ICF that is available locally, preferring not to ship mostly air.  What is the distribution network for this block, is there a local distributor to you?

I can't get sufficient info from their website to determine how well this block would perform.

Remember its nor just the block but the entire wall system that matters to you, the owner/builder.

Is the U-value uniform? how much steel is required? Are there experienced installers available? Whats the delivery schedule of replacement blocks/
