I have acquired an acre of property that I'm going to be building on (currently in the planning stages). Most of it is going well. I do have one snag. There is an older (1977) double-wide mobile home on the lot that I need to get rid of. It's not worth selling, I'd rather just demolish it, or???

Does anyone know of ways to get rid of old mobile homes? I'm starting to get desperate on this one.

Thanks!!

Hi Ric,

If you haven't already, try calling the United Way, Red Cross, the Salvation Army, or other local charities, and ask if they want it. You may be able to donate it for a tax write-off and also help someone else. You may also just run an ad advertising that someone can have it if they arrange to haul it off.

If not, it's no big deal to have the machine that does your excavating also destroy it and throw it into roll-off cans. They'll mash it down real good and get in just a few 30-yard cans.

Sometimes in rural areas the volunteer fire department can burn them for "training".

Use it for a construction office, then try some of the suggestions for disposal.

There may be recycling options for some of the components.

Maybe someone here needs a temp. construction office who lives within a reasonable distance... try a post on the local state forum.

Unfortunately, I can't use it as a construction office; it's right exactly where the house will be going. And, since it's a double wide, moving to another location on the site just isn't an option. In fact, giving it away is proving a challenge because of the problems, and expense of moving a double-wide mobile.

So far, crunching it up sounds like the best option, if I can find a way to do that.

There is a used-mobile-home parts store in a nearby town. I'm going to call them for suggestions.

I also thought maybe some of the local mobile-home sales places may have some ideas.

I bet if you put an ad in the paper for "free mobile, you haul" it would generate some interest and then you wouldn't have to spend any money to get rid of it.

I ended up demolishing it. The costs of disposing of it any other way were outweighing the cost of just demolishing it, and hauling the scrap away.
