The response mechanism for Private Messages is woefully lacking. Some O-B here has written to me asking me about my experiences in building my own home. Because I have not done that, I responded (this landed in my email box) saying as such. I use pine, which is a no-frills entirely text-based email. No frames or graphics or anything fancy like Outlook or Thunderbird sometimes manages. The O-B wrote back saying "your message was blank?" so I responded again, this time without quoting his email -- just text -- same response from this guy.

At this point, I don't know how to communicate back with him. The email which was sent to me is ob20149@ownerbuilderbook.com

I'd recommend looking into changes related to how email responses to "@ownerbuilderbook.com" addresses are parsed, because if a purely text-based message is somehow "not visible", then something ain't right.

Meanwhile: Jay, I'm sorry, but in case you see this, I have not yet built a house.

Holly,

You may be right, I have not had a single contact respond at all when I use the contact list.   I just thought they were not interested.   I am 50 miles southwest of Houston and currently in the planning phase.  I have the land and now having house plans drawn by a home designer in Houston.

Has the new server been introduced and put in place? My access was down on this site a few days ago and the reason was for upgrading the server. My access is back but the slowness factor is just a bad. I love this site and get so much info but I just don't have the time to sit and wait every time I change pages. It is maddening. Will this ever get better?

Mary Beth:

Yes, the new server is in place. Could you tell me when and where you get a slowdown? For me it has been lively, almost instantaneous. The new server is a beast with hundreds of times the capacity of the old one. But there could be hangups in our site that we don't know about.

Holly and George:

Thanks for the heads up about Private Messages/O-B Connections. We'll dig into it this week.

The page will load but then is non-responsive or will not allow any movement or clicking of links on that page. This usually lasts 5-10 seconds per page change.

"5-10 seconds per page change"  That would be a record for me!!!  I started building 2 years ago and have never been able to use this site.  My wait times for a page change are 45 seconds to over a minute.  I no longer respond to questions and rarely visit the site.  Too bad.  My construction technique included many things that people on this site ask about (spray foam insulation, demand hot water, bermed construction, etc.)  Unfortunate that information can't be readily obtained or shared on this site.  The time delays on posting remind me of the excavator I hired (and fired).

That load time is completely unacceptable.  Here is my problem:  the longest load time I can seem to get is around 5 seconds, most pages load in <3 seconds.

Could I get you guys to refresh this page 5 times and reply with the times that it takes until the page is usable?  Pressing the F5 key will refresh most browsers.

My Example:
1.  4.21 seconds
2.  1.13 seconds
3.  0.38 seconds
4.  0.69 seconds
5.  0.56 seconds

And then tell me, what kind of internet connection you have.  If any of you happen to have FireFox with FireBug installed, let me know too.  That would be able to give me even more information.

Thanks,

Here are my times.

1.  46 seconds (to follow your link back to the Misc. page)

2.  1 minute 14 seconds to refresh.

3.  1 minute 38 seconds to refresh.

4.  2 minutes 9 seconds to refresh.

5.  2 minutes 34 seconds to refresh.

6.  57 seconds to get to the reply screen to post these times.

It's not unusual for me to spend 45 minutes on this site just to read several posts.

I don't have FireBug or FoxFire.  I have Quest DSL and just tested the speed.  1326kbps download and 621kbps upload.  When I'm on this site and open another window to go the Speakeasy website for a speed test, it takes me >30 seconds just to get away from the O/B site.

I am using IE 6 SP2 128 bit with high speed internet of 3,000kps. I have noticed that I get the error on page icon in the bottom left of my IE page and sometimes it goes away but sometimes it stays the whole time I am browsing the O-B site. I am new to this site but I agree it is very cumbersome to try and gain anything from it because I feel like I am back on dial up connection speeds but the site appears to have a lot of useful info.

the error screen reads

line 261

char 4

error "document.getelementbyid(...)' is null or not an object

I will ditto what Jon said as far as my page will refresh quickly and but then it will take another 25-30 seconds for me to be able to get a hot link or scroll capability. I refreshed 5 times like you asked and none of the times got faster. I use Time Warner Cable road runner running through Internet Explorer browser. Where can I find the speed?

This is not related to speed but to posting. My ability to post a new thread is gone. I can't find the "new thread" button on any page of a forum. I also get an error message when I click on the "next" button to go to  the second page of threads on a forum.  Whats up?

Dorthy,

The issues that you were seeing should now be fixed.  I am still chipping away at the speed issues that some are seeing.

Yes, the times at the bottom of the page are just what it takes for the server to render the page.  With this new server, those times are super short.  The issue that you are seeing with 10 second times has to do with 2 things:
1.  Each page downloads lots of images, script files, etc.
2.  IE 6 is an old and relatively slow browser

I'm working on how to improve #1.  If you can, I would recommend upgrading to IE 7 or FireFox.  Both are superior in every way.  For home use, I have no real preference.

The best way to measure the times is to click on the "Forums" link at the top of the page and count out the seconds until the page is useable.

Mark, could I get you to try again?  Just click on the "Forums" link at the very top of the page a couple of times and let me know how long it takes until the page becomes usable.  Ignore the text at the bottom of the page that says how long it took to generate the page - just count out the number of seconds like you did the first time.

I found a computer that was experiences long load times and was able to finally track down something that made a difference on it - though it was not seeing anything along the lines of what you have been seeing.

Thanks again,

I upgraded to Explorer 7 last week and it didn't seem to do much.  Sat down at the computer today and "Shazam!"  I'm getting reload times in the 1-2 second range.  I can finally use this site.

Yeah!! Yeah!!! Yeah!!!!! I quit frequenting this site because I was being driven batty over the incredibly long load times. I just happened to click over today and WOW!! Like warp speed!!!! Thanks so much! I know there has to be so much info on here that I have yet to mine. I don't think I did anything differently on my end, so it must be coming from you.

Thanks Again!

I'm as happy as Mary Beth about the speed improvements!  Jeff, I'm one that used to experience slow load times (the page would become visible fairly quickly, but it would be upwards of 10-12 seconds before I could scroll down and use the page).  And that was with IE 7.  Now each page loads fully and releases control to me in 2-3 seconds at the most!

I don't know if it was the server migration or something else, but your website just became 100 times more usable!  Thanks for your diligence!

Shane
