I came across this site and The Owner-Builder Book early on. I gained a lot of valuable information from the book and this site.

Any opinions on the various housewraps out there?  Tyvek, Typar, etc.  Any personal experiences good or bad with either?  Thanks!

Scott,

I have gotten numerous opinions and the consensus was that it is more important how well the wrap is installed than the material.  I have been comparing Tyvek window wrap versus a "house brand" window wrap.  The Tyvek window wrap is over four times the money.  Below is a link with some pretty good info about house and window wrap.

Chris,

I have known that we were going to use some type of house wrap, but it wasn't until resently we decided we just didn't want to pay the price for Stucco. So, we now have installed windows and need to wrap the house. Do you have any suggestions that may help?

According to the website you provided we should have wrapped the house before we installed the windows. But, the windows are in and I am looking for a way to fix it without removing the windows.

Thanks Craig

Lori, you still can wrap the house. Just cut out around doors and windows. Depending on your exterior finish you would use flashing or if your using vinyl siding then technically you don't need the flashing if you properly caulk as you put the channel up around the door/window frames.

We may as well never have put up the Tyvek.  My framers did a good job of putting it up LAST FALL!  However, because of some issues with the foundation, we had to re-excavate the house to fix them and build up a new brick ledge.  Because of winter, delay of materials, etc...this took an extra 7 months!  Now my Tyvek wrap is tattered & torn.  I don't have the extra money in the budget (the foundation fixes cost me nearly $30K!) to fix the Tyvek.  We tried to repair it as best we could, but it is pretty pathetic looking.  Brick is going up tomorrow...  So now I am faced with doing the best "sealant" job I can from the inside.  We will try to caulk the seams from the inside...then put in 1" foam insulation followed by cellulose.
