My wonderful mother-in-law knows that I am working to save money to finish the inside of my house.  She gave me six hundred dollars to buy something to further my work on the house.  This is what I have as of now:
1.  foundation
2.  framed
3.  siding, exterior doors, and windows
4.  metal roof
5.  bathtub shower combo for one of my bathrooms

I am thinking I should buy something that the family will see every day, like a sink or lighting fixture.  Or I could buy something that will complete the house like a electrical wire or paint.

I'm asking if you guys will suggest what I can purchase for $600.  I don't want to add money to it.  I want to say "look what my mother-in-law bought for us."

Thanks

Wow Rachal -- that's a tough one! It's hard to say without knowing your layout and schedule.  Do you have any other big-ticket items like a master bathtub or anything? Something that needs to go in soon?  Just seems to me it would be nice to go ahead and use that money for something now rather than waiting till you get to paint or lighting fixtures.  Although I do understand wanting to be able to point to a tangible object and say she bought it.  If you have any other tub or shower units -- they need to go in soon and would be something your family uses everyday. Good luck -- let us know what your decision is.

Wow! That's great that you trust your Mother-In-Law. If mine gave me money I would be wondering what strings were attached. :-)

But I do have a suggestion... If your plans call for a fireplace, you can usually pick up a nice fireplace insert unit for around that price this time of year since fireplaces are out of season and are on clearance. That would be something visible that you can attribute to her gift.

Good luck!

Great idea.  I will have a wood stove for my primary heat.  I budgeted $1,000 for one, but as you said, maybe I can find a good deal this time of the year.  I will start shopping for one.

I did a little shopping for toilets.  I could buy two dual flush toilets for a little over $600.

My mother-in-law is great!  She must have gone to mother-in-law school and passed with an A+.  She would never want anything in return, and she is never critical of my crazy ideas (like building my own house).

In the end it would be much better to say, "Your gift of $600 will keep our family warm and cozy through the winter," rather than say, "Your gift of $600 will be remembered every time we flush."

Thanks
