Underground utilities (500 ft) requiring conduit for service/phone/cable.  Excavator lays my conduit.  Each utility company pulls own line.  My question is: I understand there is a pulling string to pull the cable.  Does this string come with the conduit?  Can the conduit and string be used again when each utility comes to pull lines?  Should cable and phone have its own conduit to exclude interference?

Jon, check with your local utilities providers, generally electric goes in first, then backfil (can't remember depth, been too many years since I did it, probably at least a foot) then phone and cable each in own conduit.  Strings are placed by installers, if you specify, used once to pull cable through by attaching to string so now string is out and cable is in, one time use. Hope this helps.

In my locale, electrical trench is 3 ft deep, other trenches are more or less deep (water is 4 ft, gas is 2 ft, phone is direct burial and they get maybe 8 in, I don't know about cable).  For electrical, the cable was stiff enough that they could push it through from the transformer to the meter box, they didn't want a string in the conduit.  The best answer to this questions is to call the utilities and ask them the requirements.

If you need a string in the conduit, and the installers don't put one in, tie one end of the string onto a plastic sandwich bag and use a shop vac to pull it through - usually works like a champ.  You can use this string to pull through a larger rope, sufficient for pulling cable.
