So is it just me..or is it strange for a client to ask for receipts after receiving an invoice?

This has happened to us and i'm not sure how to handle it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you,

S.

What kind of work do you do? What kind of contractual arangement did you have with your client? Does your client want a receipt for what he/she paid you? Does your client want to see receipts for your materials, direct expenses or sub-contractors?

sorry michael..i should've provided more info.  i appreciate you inquiring!

we build timber frame homes and do smaller projects as well. usually we do a contract price. with the client that asked for receipts....it was contract price.

the client hasn't specified what they'd like to see receipts for. i did email them telling them the invoice they have received with downpayment is the receipt and of course once we receive full payment...we'll send an invoice off marked paid. so i'm waiting to hear back.

but what if they want a break down of the materials, labour, etc?? that's just unheard of i thought!

Sarah,

I have hired two subs for our build. One gave me a flat price and what that included (concrete) the other (plumber) gave me prices for materials and labor listed out for the rough-in, top-out, and finish. I just recently hired a sub for the fireplace, I just got a price, but a family friend does a lot of business with his company, so he gave us a good deal.

Hope this helps Lori

IMHO as a self-employed person if I do a job under a contract, I shouldn't have to justify any expense to the client unless there are inordinate increases that need to be covered. Many small businesses have eaten the extra cost just because there was a contract.

Usually if someone asks for your receipts under a contract it is because they feel cheated, over-charged or are cheap and want to reduce your right to a profit.

If you can't make a profit there is a great probability that you can't provide customer service after the project is completed. Many who have never been self-employed or in small business fail to comprehend that your overhead is important. You couldn't have taken the time to give that "free bid" all six times they changed their minds if someone wasn't paying for gasoline, telephone, office space and tires on the truck.

Regretfully, too many these days feel getting a "good deal" is to take advantage of the one providing goods or services. And the ones usually taken advantage of the most are those most desperate to get paid,  willing do dumb "deals" for a payment.
