Has anyone subbed out their own swimming pool? I have heard comments that it can be done. I would love information from someone who has done it.

Thanks.

Nancy,

Did you ever attempt subbing out the pool yourself? I would like to hear what was involved if you did. I am in Cocoa, on the east coast of Florida.

Thanks,

Don

No, we decided with all we had to do on the house, not to tackle that this time.

I too would like to hear from anyone who completely did their own swimming pool.

Hi! My dad built our own pool 20 years ago, and he and my husband built ours five years ago. Oh yes, my grandfather was inspired by my dad's pool, so he (then a 65-yr.-old) and his 66-yr.-old cousin, built his pool.

My husband (who is a pediatrician) became partners with a guy in landscaping and water features and such, and now has his own pool company. There are lots of places to order the supplies from. You have to be very exact in everything and be willing to work very hard. From start to finish our pool took two weeks. They took one week off work, and then worked after work and weekends. I'll check back to see if anyone needs any other information that my husband could give.

Nancy, I am currently building a home with an indoor pool, and I am acting as my own GC. I ordered a fiberglass pool from Waterworld fiberglass pools in New Jersey. They are the manufacturer, and they will do the installation into your excavated hole for $500. They have prices online, and they were the cheapest I found anywhere.

We did the excavation ourselves, and our electrician and plumber are doing those connections. We also had to supply the rock and water to fill pool. We also had to backfill ourselves. It took 2 hrs. for them to set and level the pool. They were very professional and easy to work with. If I had hired this done, it would have cost me $30,000 and doing it this way was $15,000. I have a 14'x32' pool. Only you can decide if this is something you can handle as a DIY'er .

Good luck - Faye

Hi all. I agree, these guys give the best price that I have found so far, check out their website and give them a call. I found them very straightforward and they deliver across the USA and they send their own people to help. (waterworldpools.com)

I used BYOP on a pool two years ago. I have all the plans and required documents and I chose the subs.

I will use all this info again when I build my new house and pool next year.

Here in Orlando, there are companies that will help with owner-building swimming pools. They typically charge 10% and help with the planning and design, and give you a complete list of subs and suppliers. They will come out and do inspections with you, and help answer any questions that come up along the construction process. From what I understand, they help save between 15% and 25% and the construction is completed more quickly.

I used a sub for a 18'x36' vinyl pool and it cost me $10,500 including the heater, lights, etc. - this is the complete cost from start to finish - This is in Southampton, NY.
