I am just beginning the research to see if I can be an owner-builder and am really glad I found The Owner-Builder Book and the website.

We are currently building in the Orlando area, and I have a carpenter who introduced me to a Brazilian guy who brings granite up. He sells sheets that are 26"x8', 6' and 4'. His prices seem very reasonable and the product looks great.

We are looking at two colors - Peacock Green and a Venetian multicolor that is lighter in color. He has some very unique stuff also. He says the Venetian is $16.50 a SF and the Green is $14.35 a SF. The install would be $8 a SF and edging would be $10 a LF, plus cut the hole for sink for $200.

Does anyone have experience with anything like this?  Seems to be a case of taking out the middleman.

I'm not sure, but it sounds like a great price! Please post pics if you go through with it so we can see. Does this guy do flooring as well? I think we're going to go with SileStone for our counters, but we're looking for deals on flooring.

Tom,

We had 84 sq ft of Uba Tuba granite installed in our home. Full bullnose and 4" backsplash. I figured back and came up with $50 sq/ft material and labor. Plus $200 for the sink hole.

I guess the Uba Tuba is fairly common, nothing exotic or anything. Sounds like you're getting a good price, if the guy does good work. About a year after ours was installed, all three of our joints popped. We had to hire a different person to come back and shim the tops and fix the seams. This cost about $300. Next time we'll do more research on a better installer.

FYI: We don't like the dark granite. If we do granite again we'll do a lighter color. The dark granite shows EVERYTHING! Water spots, etc. We too are considering Silestone.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

Tom:

Can you please provide me with the person's name and number? I am looking to replace my countertop with granite. My property is in Oviedo.

Thanks,

Armando
