Find out off the Internet where you can get free seedlings to plant in your yard, or other free tree programs. Check with your county agriculture extension agent as well.
• The National Arbor Day Foundation gives you 10 seedlings when you become a member. Owner-builder Preston H. found a reforestation source and planted 6,000 free seedlings on his six-acre property. Taylor H. noticed that his city was widening a road and was able to get three free mature trees that were slated for removal. Their value was over $1,000 each. He paid $45 apiece to have them cut out with a big root ball and placed in his truck. The rest was up to him. Our local municipal power company gives free trees each year: “For Homeowners with Central Air Conditioning! Provo City Power energy conservation and forestry divisions are teaming up to promote energy conservation in our community. Giving our customers trees to strategically place around their homes is a win-win situation for Provo Power and our customers. Planting a shade tree in the proper location helps lower the homeowner’s cooling costs and Provo Power also saves because we don’t have to purchase expensive new power. Trees act as natural air conditioners reducing heat and reflection from the Sun’s hot rays. This natural cooling happens as water evaporates from the leaf surfaces into the surrounding air. When the right tree is planted at that proper site, trees can be as beneficial as other energy-saving home improvements including insulation, weather stripping and shade screens. Cooling costs can be reduced 30 to 50 percent by a proper placement of trees around buildings, air conditioners, and paved areas. Also, a lawn that is shaded by trees might use 30-50% less water. The trees offered by Provo City Power were chosen in order to help you select a tree that would be the most appropriate for maximum cooling of your home. All trees shed leaves, twigs, flowers or fruiting structure at some time. There is no tree that is completely maintenance-free. You may view various tree species on the Provo City website: provo.org. Just look for the pages under: Government, energy, forestry, and tree reference.”
