"Just wanted to send you a quick email to let you know how much your book helped us (and save us $). We built our house in 2004 in the Baltimore area and came in at $90/foot for a 4,000 square foot house not including basement. This included pretty much every upgrade we could do (granite in kitchen & baths, top of the line appliances & cabinets, Brazilian cherry hardwood floors, Pella windows and some landscaping and decks).  It was so nice to be able to make the decision on what to upgrade and only have to pay the actual cost to do so as opposed to the builders who were looking to mark up the upgrades by 100%+. Our house took 11 months to build (about 3 months more than we were planning).  We have been in the house for almost 3 years now and couldn't be happier with the finished product.  Also, by owner-building (with the help of a friend in construction) we were able to get into a great neighborhood that would have been a major stretch otherwise. Thanks again for giving us the courage and the knowledge to build our dream house."
Michael & Michelle S.

"Finished re-reading The Owner-Builder Book for the 4th time.  Of all the books I own (and they are legion), this one definitely rates in the top 20 of books read over and over and over again.  I am now starting my second time through The Complete Guide to Contracting Your Home.  Not as “readable”, but still has lots of useful information.  Not being a General Contractor, not being in one of The Trades, and not being particularly handy in building things in general, I am trying to educate and arm myself as best as possible, considering I’m basically a geek and useless in this realm.  After pretty much reading through all of the “Build Your Own Home for Dummies” types of books, these two really are the best ones and most useful.  Some of the others, though possibly easier to read, do not go into nearly as much depth."
Karla in Silver Springs, NV

"I was real impressed with the book. A lot of really good ideas."
Greg R. Provo, UT

"I read it, my husband is in the process, and we are sold on the idea. My husband was up til 3:30 this morning reading this, it was so enthralling to him. He says it is very helpful and he is looking forward to using the software templates. I enjoyed the website, especially the moms that are on there."
Lyn & Phil S. Kansas City, MO

"I was in the library yesterday and found your book. What a God-send!! I have been reading it and decided to check out the website. We have already been doing a lot of what is recommended by the book; getting estimates on jobs, pricing materials, calling banks, etc. I have found 2 banks willing to loan us the money with us being our own g.c. I know I am rambling on, which is out of character for me! I guess my reasons for emailing are to ask if there is any advice you can give to me and to just thank you for the book. It has encouraged me that Jim and I CAN do this ourselves and have a nice home without an enormous debt."
Jodenia & Jim M. Blacksburg, SC

"I liked it. I llike the fact that it's very easy to read. I like the way it's laid out."
Mike W. Molalla, OR

"It makes sense that you make your money in planning."
Kevin T. Lawton, OK

"You've got some good stuff in here. The savings emphasis and the encouragement helped me. It agrees with the things my buddies in contracting tell me. It breaks it all down so you can understand it."
Eric R. DeSoto, TX

"I'm so glad to find your book. I feel like we can get started now. I felt so alone, but now all of a sudden after reading your book, I see that it's not just me."
Judy & Chris P. Bothell, WA

"I enjoyed reading the book. We gathered about thirty different books, and yours had things like realtor input that no one else had. Many lists of things that we liked."
Tom W. Logan, UT

"I've been enjoying your book. I've done some projects as a project manager. That's my forte, so house building seemed like a natural. I had a contractor last time, and that convinced me never to do that again. Everything you say in your book is true."
Suanne D. Rio Rancho, NM

"I bought your book, "The Owner-Builder Book" and found your personal signature in it, we think it is cool. I am now halfway thru book and really like how you organize the contents. I was going to plan to owner-build my house in only one month but after reading your book, I extended it to one year. So I am going to continue renting house we live in now and plan aheaaaaad."
Eric Emmons (via email)

"I liked the book."
Morgan H. Mitchellville, MD

"It's a good book. I'm in construction, and I've been reading books on this for 20 years and I really enjoyed it. It was more practical, and the numbers seemed more real than other books I've read over the years. I see 50% and 60% off all the time, not just 10%. Subs will charge what they can get away with. The best part was how you talked about the planning. For me, planning is about 90% of it. It all should be done in your mind first."
Jim & Mary F. Northboro, MA

"I thought it was very great. We are doing a major remodeling, start to finish, and it's very helpful, very good info and things you learn. The numbers that hit you when you get your plans are so high, you know you have to be able to do it cheaper than that. You need to hear it over and over. Very, very good book. I was shopping around. This is very easy to follow. Easy to read and highlight. It had everything in it. Like a one stop shopping. Eye-opening, but very good. We've been doing a lot of shopping around."
Bonny P. Andover, NJ

"We've owner-built once before 24 years ago without any kind of help like this. We didn't do any of the trades. We just cleaned up and bought everything. This time we'll downsize. We have wonderful plans, and wonderful people because we've been here in this small town for a lot of years. I wish I Ôd had some literature like this the first time I did it. I just knew that I could shop better than a contractor could. We saved a lot of money the first time, and we'll do a lot better this time."
Gene P. High Springs, FL

"I read your book in two days! I really appreciated it. I'm looking forward to the CD-ROM" Gina L. Fountain Inn, SC

"I have built/remodeled several properties with my husband and just came across your book at Barnes & Nobels yesterday! Even though we have been through the process a few times, there is so much useful information packed in this book! Thank you!" Tammy Couture via email

"It's a great book."
Dick & Vicki K. Eugene, OR

"I was very inspired by your book. We're getting ready to build a house. It's going to be fun."
John O. San Rafael, CA

"It's a good book" Brian M. Hermitage, TN

"I build apartments by trade, I've built about 10,000 units. I stumbled onto your book a couple of weeks ago, and I think it's the finest publication I've ever read on the subject."
Chris V. Federal Way, WA

"My husband and I are getting ready to build a home in town and we are so much more excited about what we can accomplish because of what we have read in your book. Thanks so much for the information and tips and encouragement. We are picking up our final design plans tomorrow to submit to the city and then the real fun begins."
Shawn & Amy H. Provo, UT

"Don't change a thing. It's easy reading. That's a big plus. I use this as a Bible, throughout the whole project. It's hard to put down."
John J. Higganum, CT

"It was very refreshing to see the comments you make about referrals and subcontractor certification and the other games that go on in our industry."
Mike M. Bonham, TX

"It's a good book. I write in it and fold the pages. I like the letter to the reader that says you can do it. I've got my wife thinking we can do this. My friend is having a contractor build his house, and he says ÔI think I can do it. All you have to worry about is having the subs show up.' And you cover that in chapter 13."
Greg T. Harrison, OH

"Out little constant handy guide. It was wonderful. We listened to the tapes on the road. You did a great job."
John & Sue C. Provo, UT

"I started by reading The Complete Guide to Contracting Your Home which was full of valuable information. Then I got your book and liked it even better. Your book covers a different side of owner-building. What a perfect complement the two books are!" John & Pat W. Crystal Lake, IL

"I just finished building my wife and I a house. Where I ran into problems was in the planning stage. When you say go, you are running down a hill that's too steep, and you keep up or fall. I was thinking of going to a psychiatrist because this first project caused such emotional stress, but bought your book instead and now I know that I have control of those factors not the construction workers."
Tom M. New York, NY

"Lots of things are fine, you can add a little more about the technical aspect for people who don't know much about it. Two books might be better than one. Lots of good things in here."
Sahaj P. St. Louis, MO

"Very interesting. It's a good read that at the very least will prevent you getting ripped off. One of the most fascinating books I've ever read."
Ivey S. New Strawn, KS

"I love your book. It's great. We were trying to decide whether to act as general contractor. After reading the book we got so excited about it we are doing it now."
Becky & Steve G. Waterloo, IA

"Been in the Corps of Engineers, and have extensive homebuilding experience. I've looked at a lot of books, and yours was by far the most comprehensive, especially in getting your construction loan. There's a lot of owner-building here. If you want a decent house, you have to do it."
Clinton B. Anchorage, AK

"The book is simply great. My wife and I are in the planning stages of building our own straw bale house in Tucson, AZ. Plan to build using steel frame. Much of the physical labor is going to be done by ourselves or by volunteers. Wall raisings are not uncommon here and is quite something to see 50 or 60 friends and strangers working side by side on a job site. Most come to help and learn how to do themselves. When they are finally ready to build we go help them. There usually is a great deal of experience and lots of practical help from all walks of life at these events. A great way to save thousands building and make important contacts. And talk about enthusiasm! Walls go up in a weekend usually. The same can be done to stucco the house etc. I especially liked the concept in your book that a dollar saved is equivalent to 10 dollars in wages that does not need to be earned (or at the very least not spent needlessly). This is why I'm interested in the budget templates. Your ideas are very similar to the thinking in the book Your Money or Your Life. Following the basic principles in that book have culminated in being able to do what's in yours."
Robert G. Tucson, AZ

"Very basic, but a lot of good material that was quite helpful. I liked your timeline to crank it out in 6 months. I have built spec houses, condos, commercial renovations, now doing a personal project of 6,000 s.f. We've built other homes with a builder, and they took a year, 10 months, and 11 months each. The new one we hope to build in 10 months."
Darlene K. Pewaukee, WI

"I'm anxious to get the software and start on the Ten Commandments of Owner-Builders you mention in the book."
Brad B. Reno, NV

"I was telling a friend of mine, my lender, that this book was probably the best investment I've made in the last twelve months. You emphasized many things the average person doesn't think about. I can save a lot of money with this book, there is no doubt in my mind."
Julio L. Austin, TX

"I'm a management consultant, have done a 6,000 s.f. house, a 5,000 s.f. house, and now a 4,000 s.f. and concur with all that you said in the book. Obviously you had to be a good management consultant to create the level of detail that's in the book. I've owned book for six months, and finally took it on vacation where I read it. I want to commend you. It's written very well, and very very practical."
Jim V. Reno, NV

"These guys are all thieves, so I'm going to owner-build. I ordered five books on Amazon.com. What's another hundred bucks when you're spending all this money on a house? Of all the books, yours is about the best. I'm going to need your spreadsheets for the bank."
George S. San Diego, CA

"I do property management, and I know that preparation is everything."
Rob B. Mesquite, TX

"I appreciate your book. Thanks for writing it."
Eileen F. Holden, MO

"We really enjoyed your book. We noticed that it was the only one in the group that acknowledged and referenced the other books on the subject. It's nice to know that when you wrote the book you had already assimilated everyone else's philosophies. And you're the only one with Internet support where you can share ideas with others."
Steve & Kathryn H. Spanish Fork, UT

"I picked up several books at the bookstore. I found this to be a good book."
Ralph H. La Grange, GA

"My wife and I went to the Library, and she said we should get a book if we're going to do it ourselves, and she presented me with this book she found. We've done it before, by the seat of our pants, but this is a much better way to do it."
Bob P. Tucson, AZ

"Thank you very much for your very interesting book. I like it. I'm going to be a first-time builder, and it was very interesting to me."
Sergey K. Los Altos, CA

"It's a great book. I finished it in three days, I was so engrossed. It was extremely good."
Emmanuel G. Oak Brook, IL

"Your book was the most interesting in the bookstore. There was nothing in any other book that was so practical."
Chris F. Plainfield, VT

"It's filled with all sorts of wonderful information. A bunch of stuff in one place that would be really hard for me to find out otherwise."
Ray S. Red Bluff, CA

"We certainly appreciate your work. It's becoming our little Bible."
George & Marcia F. Tucson, AZ "My friend had your book checked out of the library so much that the librarian bought him his own copy."
Dale B. Tucson, AZ

"I enjoyed your first edition very much. I was very glad to find this second edition at the bookstore. Because I remodel houses, I watch for all the books on this subject. I've probably read them all There are so few books out there that you can use. The majority of the construction books are just written to sell.. Yours is written to inform.. Some of the books I just get maybe a paragraph out of that's new. Yours I can use."
Cliff S. York, SC

"We are working on a huge apartment project, and this is coming in really handy. The book gave us the inspiration to get started in the first place."
Edmund & Emily M. Coppers Cove, TX

"This book fell into my hands last year. It was like an answer to prayer. I just devoured the book immediately. I have 20-30 sticky tabs sticking out of it all over."
Dorethy H. Topeka, KS

"The book has been helpful in pointing us in the right direction, and giving us the right questions to ask. We wouldn't have been in as good shape if we hadn't read it."
Kurt A. Hayden, ID

"Excellent book. A lot of useful information a lot of people don't have. Very informative. As a contractor. I sat down with the book. At first I was wanting to toss it out the window. Either this guy is clueless, or he's been there before. I finally realized that the realities of running your own project are right on target. You can run your own project and become your own construction manager. Often the client doesn't have a clue and they are running fifteen subs and don't want to cut loose control and it turns into a nightmare. They are never there, but they hold the power of the purse. When the subs know that you're not cutting the check, they don't paying attention to you . It was very informative and very on target. And this is the wave of where construction will go. A great book to pass on to clients. I've got a client now where they can't get a hold of a contractor. They've done a lot of footwork, but don't have enough information to take the reins and do it. It's very hard to get contractors right now and this is a great resource for people who could do this on their own. This will give them enough to know what they are getting into at the very least. It gets crazy with people who don't know what they are doing. A contractor's perspective. We hear how to sell. And we find contractors that just slam dunk people, and we are trying to build a reputation for doing what's fair. I've laid my books open to people. Everyone talks about leveling the playing field, but that's difficult when there's no one to reinforce the certification of contractors. We find scabs out here who undercut the price but don't carry the insurance, the workmens comp., and they're not above board. We often have to go out and clean up a bad mess. If people really want to level the playing field they have to reinforce the certification of contractors. In stead, let's give everyone the information to be a true owner-builder. We're trying to run a square game. We try to make enough profits to stay in business for another day. We get slammed with high liability insurance, workers comp., and all the overhead. I'm all for people being fully informed. If someone had this information and had their project as well planned as it should be, it would be a joy to work for them. There would be very few problems. That does everybody a service."
Larry T. Santa Rosa, CA

"I really like it. I'm getting ready to build a house."
Oulay K. Wichita, KS

"I love your book. You talk about a software project in the beginning of the book. I've used that as an illustration for the need for planning at my own work."
Scott A. Walnut Creek, CA

"I love your book! I had a copy from the library, but had to order my own because I wanted to highlight so much. I'm really impressed with your book. We are trying to plan our home and are really nervous. We are getting general contractor quotes for a basic Cape Cod and their prices are so high! This book has put our mind at ease. It's a godsend. I appreciate your taking the time to write this book"
Jodenia & Jim M. Blacksburg, SC

"It was very well written. I liked the summary level detail."
Gerry R. Austin, TX

"It's inspiring. The testimonials in there are amazing. It's very tempting to do this."
Kathy N. Truckee, CA

Linda N. Edwards, CO

"This is one the best books I've found on this subject."
Terry H. Santa Fe, NM

"I appreciate your book. I thought it was a very good source. I also appreciate the postings on the web site."
Dave M. Sunnyvale, CA

"This book is done very practically. I like the way it's put together. It's not theoretical, it's my type of book. Thank you for doing this. You did a great job putting this together."
Anthony L. San Jose, CA

Richard R. Huntingtown, MD

Bill H. Sacramento, CA

"It's very helpful especially for someone new to this sort of thing."
Jason A. Lake Station, IN

"I really like the book, and the excerpts from other books, builders, and owner-builders. It made me want to read it, and it's not boring. I think it won't be as intimidating to build as I thought."
Kathy & Joe M. Seattle, WA

"It's a great book, I got it at the library, I can't be without it now. We even took it on our vacation. Finding this was very important to us."
John & Cyndee M. Bend, OR

" We've wanted to build our own home for years. Now that we have the book, it's so nice to have a guideline to follow."
Brian & Arlene S. Roosevelt, UT

"It makes sense that you make your money in planning. I have been so thankful that I ran into your website and risked buying your book. It has been a God-send to me. I am in the military, and it is very frustrating and difficult to gain any equity in a home because we are moved every three years or so. I have learned how incredible home ownership is because of the increasing value of the investment. I left active duty and stayed in the house that we bought, but now, seven years later, we'll start to have to move again. My goal is to have a free and clear home by the time I retire in ten years. With the help from your work, I believe that it is possible, and I think that it would be great for my kids to learn so that they can do the same thing when they get older."
Kevin T. Lawton, OK

"I'm a retired IBMer and think your book makes good sense."
Wayne S. Las Vegas, NV

"Thank you for this book! I sat up and read half of it the first night."
Tim & Kristie K. Provo, UT

"I'm in construction, and I've really enjoyed reading the book, especially the commando shopping techniques. Better than all the other books I saw. It's a really a good book"
Curtis & Cheryl B. Valparaiso, IN

"It's an excellent source, to be honest with you. Very very good."
Khawar H. London, ON

"I borrowed the book from a friend and read it three times, and am now moving in the direction of building our own home."
Ralph S. Corona, CA

"It's a great book, an interesting book. I used to build houses, and this book made more sense than all the construction books."
Jim B. Redlands, CA

"It's a very interesting book. I had to have it for a reference. I bought a lot of construction books, but this gives you a lot more detail about insurance, things you can save on, what to watch for. It gave me a lot more to think about."
Bruce C. Vernal, UT

"I read the first two chapter last night. It's a terrific book. It's wonderful."
Duane F. Turlock, CA

"Thank you! Finally something that's nuts and bolts. We consult to the construction trade. We've seen all of our people become millionaires doing this."
Tamara Z. Rio Nido, CA

"It's pretty thorough, I'm impressed with it."
Mark L. Redding, CA

"I like your book. I am a contractor and a developer. I'm going to give the book to a friend, it will really help him. Well written and good resources."
Ken & Lori G. Hat Creek, CA

"I read one of the books about contracting your home and found it tedious. But The Owner-Builder Book definitely motivates you to want to build. I'm anxious to look at the spreadsheet templates for budgeting on your free CD-ROM. I love the logic in the book as to why to owner-build. The whole thing makes complete sense to me."
Rick & Lisa B. Patuxent River, MD

"I'm a total novice, I find it really helpful. It's a great book. I'm glad, too that you have the CD with the free software so I set up my budget easily. I also like the resources in the back of the book. It's really good having a book like this to use."
Bonnie D. Bainbridge Island, WA

"Have built two houses already. With your ideas I can enjoy and make money at the same time. The book is very very good. Keep it up."
Aldemar T. New York City, NY

"It's got me really excited about everything. I've done all kinds of construction, but there are so so many thought-provoking things about the book, I've been suggesting this to the architects and contractors that I deal with to help them think about things. I think it's a must read for architects and contractors."
Bert M. Taos, NM

"This is the most comprehensive book of it's type."
Tom W. Biglerville, PA

"Thanks for the book you've written. I've also listened to all your tapes. I listened to all eight of them in a two day period. Wonderful book and tapes. A wonderful job that the market really needed." Mark K. Old Bridge, NJ

"This is a real good book. I got a few of the other books. This is the best of all. It's tailor-made for people who want to set up and manage a project. I got one house going up and two more in the works. This first house is four months over, and I'm paying big interest on this. I decided to read up and do the next one right. I'm a real estate appraiser. I'm always seeing these builders. We tear down old houses here. If you do this right, you can make some money. A lot of good tips. I'm going to immerse myself in the material. I'm buying your whole library, and it's chump change compared to the interest I'm paying. I appreciate your putting out this book. You go right to the heart of exactly what I need to make the thing happen. I don't need to see schematics or know how to lay brick."
Pat D. Bayonne, NJ

"Your book is very popular here in Tennessee."
Mikail V. Chattanooga, TN

"I ordered one of the other books about self-contracting on Amazon which came highly recommended. When I found it didn't really teach you how to save money, I wasn't too pleased. Your book also came highly recommended, and this time I agree."
Don M. Paterson, NJ

"This is my fourth owner-built house, so I thought I might get something out of the book. It's great and very enjoyable to read."
John V. Constantine, MI

"This has been like my bible. I've checked it out of the library so many times, I was embarrassed to do it any more, so I bought it. Thank God you wrote that book."
Sudye C. White Springs, FL

"It's great, especially the budgeting stuff."
Angela D. Bernalis, CA

"I enjoyed it, thought it was pretty good."
Daniel G. St. Clair Shores, MI

"I have read just about everything on the subject. I'm a big fan of audiotapes, and was pleased to see that you offer those as well. It's such easy reading, Many books on the subject are technical manuscripts. Yours is full of just good advice. I like the sidebars, 'Readers Say', and 'Sources Say' Great, great stuff. Realtor surveys I liked, good comparisons. No matter how many books I read, there's something new to learn."
Josee L. Charlotte, NC

"I bought your book yesterday and spent two hours reading it and another hour this morning. It's a tremendous source of information.. There were eight or nine books on the subject at the bookstore, and I chose this as the best one for my purposes. It's newer than the others in copyright, and it's very good."
Roger R. Elmwood Park, NJ

"Bought your book and was thrilled. I am going to show the naysayers around me that I can build my own home. I can't put the book down. I've been trying to start this house for 20 years. This helped me to get off the dime. I always wanted to build my own house. This helps you believe you can do it."
Jeff F. Hampton, VA

"I checked out ten books from the library. I decided to purchase yours and The Not So Big House. I also volunteer for Housing America. I'm trying to learn by helping people. The book was pretty thorough and has helped me immensely. It's a blueprint. I now know it's possible. Knowing that the web site was there and I could talk to other people gave me lots of encouragement. That a wonderful plus."
Jane H. Kingman, AZ

"I'm loving this book. It's been really helpful. I love your book."
Jeanne D. Navasota, TX

"Have done building in the past, and this has given us hints that will be helpful to us."
Joann W. Snohomish, WA

"Your book was a pleasure to read and very helpful. The best of the bunch!"
Robert D.

"You placed a big emphasis on buying materials directly, that made me consider building my own home."
Dan Q. Overland Park, KS

"I read the book through and I'm about to turn around and doing it again, because you always miss something. Your 100 Ideas to make your new house save money or effort are terrific. Without spending a lot more money, you can get a better house, like the sports court in the garage, the whole house water filter, larger gauge wiring, extra insulation, home theater set up. I also learned from the book that you have to go down item by item and see where you can save."
William B. Brooklyn, NY

"When I found out about your book I drove in and bought it immediately. Great stuff in there. It's very very good. And I've read a lot of different books on this subject."
Tim M. Sahuarita, AZ

"We are starting to gather bids for our house. (4,500 s.f.) We hope to begin construction late spring. We have found your book to be really helpful with suggestions and planning.
Lois F.

"The tapes have beeen wonderful. My husband listens to them every day back and forth to work. I really appreciate the book because it's coming at the right time, and I can really incorporate a lot of extra features in my home I didn't expect. It also gave me a lot of details I didn't understand, like interacting with subs, how to shop, and controlling and comparing expenses with a spreadsheet. I picked up a lot of neat features that I hadn't thought of like indirect lighting, a racquetball court in outbuilding, where I will park my motorhome, and use sports court too."
Ted & Regi M. Monroe, UT

"In some respects it's excellent. Some great ideas, but it hasn't got the nitty gritty about buying a lot. It's very inspiring, and accurate. Your analysis is right. What's amazing is that show that you are only three or four builds away from being mortgage-free. How to go about planning and coordinating the planning and design of the house, who do you go to, for a technically complex house. Mechanical, structural, architect. One of your best observations is that this is a management job. I want a little chapter on computer tools. Thanks for writing this book."
Barry K. Asheville, NC

"It's really, really good. I've read it once, and will do it again. It was just what I needed. I'm really looking forward to the CD-ROM to get my spreadsheets started. It's been really eye-opening for me. It's gotten me started. I am recommending it to all my friends."
Rob R. Elk River, MN

"We found the book to be so helpful, just a wealth of information. We took the tour of the Riverbottoms house on your web site, it was absolutely wonderful. Just great information."
Doris A. Phillipsburg, MO

"Excellent, I thought it was great. Solidified everything I ever thought about the home building process."
T.J. C. Fresno, CA

"It's laid out pretty clearly."
Gerry & Maura L. Rockford, MI

"I'm halfway through it, I really like it. It's simple reading, anybody can understand it. I did this about three years ago, and find the book to be very accurate. You can save a lot of money building your own home."
Phillip W. Owasso, OK

"I didn't get any sleep last night reading your book. I think I can do this!! It's a great book. My husband is going to read it this weekend."
Sue G. Huntsville, TX

"We had two owner-builders near us. Neither of them listened to us or read your book. One had a contractor who quit the job when half-done. That guy went over by $70,000. That project was not planned at all in advance. The other owner-builder went $15,000 over."
Bart & Shery H., Hooper, UT

"I just received your second edition and am looking forward to reading it. I read the first edition cover to cover. I loved it."
Dean S.,  Chattanooga, TN

"Your wonderful book arrived a day or so ago and I want to thank you for it. We have had built for us a total of 5 houses and in each one I had a very active part in the planning, contracting, building, etc. so I am able to appreciate probably more than most the high value of your book. You and Elaine are performing a great service for many thousands of people who otherwise would never be able to afford a home of their own."
Ben G.,  Provo, UT

"Thank you for the copy of the Owner Builder Book that you sent me. My wife has already read the entire book and is excited to start building."
Doug B.,  Payson, UT

"I'm extremely excited about your book. I actually read eight books over the winter, and yours was by far my favorite. This is something that can organize people to do a lot of neat stuff. I've read your book four times. My wife couldn't understand why I was so motivated until she finally started reading the book. Your book is so current, and stays focused on the owner-builder and contractor side of it, and that's what we needed. Some of these other books tell you no! They tell you about how much money you could lose. They were written by expert builders with a bias. Some of them were written in the seventies, and they don't even apply. Your book goes with me everywhere I go. It's priced right too. When I wear this copy out, I will order a new one."
Mike & Shannon C.,  Kansas City, MO

"The information is very valuable and realistic to the do-it-yourselfers like myself."
Julie J.,  Cincinnati, OH

"We appreciate the book. My husband read it real thoroughly and pointed out parts to me."
Ken & Phyllis P.,  Pocatello, ID

"I really liked your book, and I've started to get a feel for owner-building."
Virginia S.,  Fredericksburg, VA

"I had bought another book, and I found that yours is different than the others. Your book was less than the other one I bought, but it had 90% additional information. I was shocked. This is heaven-sent. I was getting nervous, but now I feel as though I can actually do it. It's really a really good book and it is well-written. This is really well put together. Very interesting and informational."
Candy M. ,  Washington, DC

"I got it from the library, and I want it for myself now."
Patti C. ,  Salisbury, NC

"I saw it in the library, brought it home, and thought, Gee, this is really a great book.' We've bought ten books on building and yours was one of the best for practical information. It's just a well put together book. You often see shoddy construction, and your book gave us a lot of things to work with, and information on managing the project. I've enjoyed your book so much, and Jerry has been studying it and studying it. Your book is so superior to the others. It helps us to know how to plan . This is the best book we've read and we've read quite a few."
Joanne & Jerry C.,  San Jose, CA

"It's excellent. Your book comes across so straight and forward, I have no problem understanding any of it. My husband and I have begun to feel like we can do this. Out of twenty books in the library, yours made the most sense. Those others are loaded with technical terms and are confusing."
Gloria & Matt G.,  South Jordan, UT

"Going through your features I realized you have a lot of good ideas, like putting a reading light over the tub - and I studied architecture in college. Your book makes a tremendous amount of sense."
Mark J. ,  Chandler, AZ

"I enjoyed the book quite a bit. It was really easy to get through. I enjoyed all the lists and worksheets. The other books are mostly overwhelming, with details I don't want to know."
Bryn & Mark G.,  Sisters, OR

"I am a building designer and have been building for years. I think this is an excellent book. I also have a contractor's license. It's very sound, and I think it would be useful to people in the industry as well. So many contractors do not know what they are doing, It would help some of the contractors very much. Especially the ones in their first five years. Especially the ones who come from the trades up. They lack business experience. There are only a few books in the field that compare to this. I read a lot of books, take a lot of magazines, and this is very good. This would help people that I meet frequently."
Don B.,  Bend, OR

"We are still in the design phase of our new home. I know your book will be a great benefit."
Marie C.,  Montgomery, AL

"My husband and I have been thinking (dreaming) of building for 3 years. We now own some beautiful property in the Thumb of Michigan and hope to make our "dream" a reality later this year. Your book will be especially helpful as we start this venture - there sure are a lot of things to consider! Shelli G.,  Port Austin, MI

"The book is very interesting & surprisingly very relevant here in Canada. We are proceeding with building our house & will be contracting the whole thing."
Peter W.,  Cambridge, Ontario

"I sat down for several hours with the book and I really enjoyed it. Of course the format is really lovely - user friendly - up-to-date. I liked that a lot. I also liked your section headers within each chapter and I especially liked that they came up so frequently. In other words that the material under each section heading was not boringly l-o-n-g winded. So it was very enjoyable to breeze through a good deal of the book. I was also interested and frustrated in your experience with the unlicensed subs who put a lien on the place and all the trouble and hassle that resulted. Your description of how 'lonely' it was to sit at the job site waiting for subs who did not show up really resonated. Nothing more discouraging and lonely is the right word. I also loved your punch list description from Ohio and how that all worked out with over a 100 punch list items and how they just said forget it and keep the cash so you could do things yourself. I also liked your description of the punch list items in the new house and how so many of them were what you saw as imperfections in your own painting prowess. Also the story of the man who had the sheetrock fall on him was very sobering. I loved what you had to say also about the strain on marriage relationships when trying to undertake this kind of project. I also really loved the section on how your house can work for you towards the end of the book. That was great. The book certainly is loaded with a gazillion great ideas."
Nancy and Mark J.,  Winchendon, MA

"First let me say thank you for all the wonderful information I have found in your book. I am in the very early stages of finding a lot to build my family's dream home. I am finding that here in Southern California that you could be on one side of the street and build a home for $$$$ per square foot, literally cross the street and build at another price. (P.S. I absolutely love your sense of humor, I find myself grinning from ear to ear when reading your book)."
Leon & Monique M.,  Carlsbad, CA

"Although I'm not building the house myself, your book has come in very handy to get discounts. I love your book, I think it's just phenomenal. I've read it six times. Each time I read I learn a little bit more. It is so marked up, it's unbelievable. Everybody should have this when they build a house or do renovations."
Mel & Barbara W.,  Palo Alto, CA

"I found your book so enlightening. I thought I was borderline on building an even modest home on the 5 acres I bought last year. After I read your book I realized that my home will be the envy of everyone in my new development. I am trying to follow your ideas to the tee and have my planner started and am recording my path through the 1,000 hour goal. My anticipated start date is next April."
Barry M.,  Willowick, OH

"This is a good book. Nice balance of detail with enthusiastic prose. Half of this battle is keeping yourself psyched up. That's what I like most about your book is keeping myself psyched up."
Sam W.,  Avondale, AZ

"My wife and I read your book with enthusiasm."
Jason C.,  Los Angeles, CA

"In all honesty, I've wanted to build a house since `91, and did a lot of waiting for people to help me, and then I found your book. I realized I could do it myself."
Barbara G.,  McKinleyville, CA

"It is an excellent book. Your spreadsheet templates are very helpful. Saves a lot of time."
Tom & Stephanie K.,  Bailey, CO

"I just finished reading through your book for the first time and I wanted to thank you. From most of the sources that we have consulted, we have been hearing about how difficult and expensive it will be to do this project. After reading your book, I have confidence that my wife and I will be able to build our dream house."
Jonathan H.,  Salt Lake City, UT

"Your book and software have been a great help so far in the project that I have undertaken, which is turning a 730 sq. foot tiny Spanish house, into a 1500 sq. foot custom home with all the charm of the original structure, plus more. I'm about one fourth of the way through the project but being that I have never done anything like this before, your book has been an excellent guide and source of information."
Charles D.,  Los Angeles, CA

"I'm enjoying your book very much. Good stuff."
Cliff T.,  Santa Fe, NM

"I enjoyed your book very much and you convinced me to build. The planning guides are especially helpful. You have a nice system set up, I have to commend you for that."
Steve & Sally C.,  Geronimo, TX

"Phenomenal nuggets throughout. The sidebars are beautiful nuggets. Owner-Builder's suggestions on what to have in your home was particularly valuable. The GC's here are busy and have become real proud. They are quoting high and they don't care. I found a retired general who only charges me $16 an hour to oversee the subs and help out. We're real excited about your book. Very informative, and it provides a good service. A friend of mine built a home in `98 and recommended reading this. References on Amazon were very good. I love how you wrote the book, it's just like you are there talking to us. Easy read, it comes up with phenomenal nuggets. You are providing a great service. When we close on our home, our net worth is going to really kick up."
John & Julia M.,  Greensboro, NC

"I like how it's laid out. I'm one of those A.D.D.-type people, and the bold subtitles makes it easy to follow and readable."
John D.,  Columbus, OH

"I want to thank you so much for your most detailed and well planned book. I will use the book when we build our home. When we do I will certainly follow your detailed plan in designing a house that will work for us."
Lila P.,  Pocatello, ID

"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I will need assistance (I moved here from MN without family or friends) and your book has given me encouragement that I can do it. I am considering building with "Poly-Steel" concrete-filled-polystyrene-form exterior walls and steel studs for partition walls. These methods are seldom used here, although popular elsewhere, and reading about other owner-builders who made their great accomplishments encourages me to build my home exactly the way I want it to be built. Again, thank you!"
Ann Wagner,  Hereford, AZ

"You have given us the right direction in your book."
Jason & Robin M.,  Charlotte, NC

"When we picked up the book, I sat down and read it cover to cover , and said, this is it, I'm going to follow this. We have a friend trying to build. She called me and I told her this is the one best thing you can do for yourself. Use this book."
Kathi & Joe D. Tucson, AZ

"I wanted to compliment you on the bigger, easier to read format, and the side-bar references to other books and correlating articles in The Owner-Builder Book. This is an excellent home-building manual."
Carole & Bill M. Las Vegas, NV

"The second edition is very easy to read. I'm amazed at all the information you have packed in this book. It's really, really a masterpiece. It opens your eyes up wide. You didn't miss anything, and I'm always looking forward to the next chapter."
Mel & Cece B. Minneapolis, MN

"I liked it, it's really excellent, well organized and very well laid out."
Tom L. Black Diamond, WA

"Just wanted to thank you for the book. It is a great source of focus when beginning the process of considering to build a house! My wife and I will be building a log home in three years so we are on our way in the planning process. Thanks."
Mike G. South Windsor, CT

"I found your book by accident and started to think seriously about it. Thank you so much for writing that book. It's going to make things interesting and fun."
Gloria & Matt G. South Jordan, UT

"We were planning to break ground this summer until we got your book, and then we decided we'd save a lot more money if we waited until after the first of the year. Several subs we've spoken to have confirmed that."
Larry J. Dickinson, TX

"Your book was wonderful and I went to your website and there was a ton of information there too. The book was very very easy to read. I didn't have to struggle. It's right there."
Henry P. Arlington, VA

"I went to B4Ubuild.com, went through their entire list of books, looked each up on Amazon, read all the reviews, and all the ratings, and I bought three books, and yours was my first choice."
Helen M. Raleigh, NC

"It's a great book."
Francis W. San Rafael, CA

"I like your book, and I read the first edition. I just picked up your second edition, and I like some of the forms that you have that make things easier."
Roxann B. Bountiful, UT

"I enjoyed reading the book. I breezed through it the first time, and then when I read it again, I saw much more depth."
Carolyn H. Colorado Springs, CO

"I have been fascinated with everything I've read since getting the book. You've done a wonderful job on the book,. It makes the process a lot easier. Your Resource Diskette is wonderful, too. As soon as I got it I sat down and started using it."
Ivealia D. Tulsa, OK

"Enjoyed your book very much, it gave me lots of incentive. My house will be finished framing next week. We are doing it as the contractor ourselves. We moved out of the valley where we live a few years ago, then moved back and found that existing houses were $30,000 higher. We started thinking, We could build new for this.' Every subcontractor I've talked to so far has been very nice. No one has talked down to me. We also read The Complete Guide to Contracting Your Home and thought it was a little out of date. We like your book better."
Shauna & Jon H. Orem, UT

"I'm on my second time through the book. I like it. It encourages me, I think we can do it even though we are virtually ignorant, if we start on planning now."
Jim & Debbie B. Bedford, PA

"Loved the book.We will build a house, we're in the design stages with architect now. We have land in Hercules, CA."
Terrance S. El Sobrante, CA

"I've enjoyed the book so far, I'm on my second read. It was very valuable. It will enable us to get what we want and keep it within our budget."
Eric B. California, MD

"It's excellent. I've bought a lot of books on this and you've done a wonderful job. You've addressed everything."
Peter & Doreen M. Oakland, CA

"It's made me think about doing things. I bought it for my business, but now looking to put in a duplex. Also reading The Complete Guide to Contracting Your Home. I really appreciate the work you did here. It's fantastic."
Jim W. Austin, TX

"It's invaluable. I told two or three friends about it."
Karen & Louis H. Dallas, TX

"Your book is fantastic. I can't say enough about it. I went to the library for the first edition, and read it. It was great. And the second edition is actually much better. This is very well done, it keeps you interested, and it gives people courage. Out of all the ones we found so far, we really like it, it's been very helpful."
Angela T. Liberty, MO

"I've read your entire book. I saw where the budget was, and was going to type it in, but saw that you had a free CD. My brother loves the book. I think it's very nice. I really liked the advice on how to wow the lender. I have to do all the prework now. I'm gonna get three, four, or five bids."
Tom H. Vandalia, OH

"A friend of mine saw the book at a home show, and has since built his with it, and he swears by it. He calls it his Bible. He was very complimentary."
Lowell B. Brigham City, UT

"I am a home renovation contractor. I like your book, it's real nice, there's a lot of good information in there. I want to start building for myself every two years and get the tax benefits."
Tom J. Madison, CT

"I am a commercial contractor along with my father. My husband is a cabinet man. We both chose your book in the bookstore. It was the easiest to read, made the most sense, and was the easiest to follow, it was laid out much better than the other ones we looked at. My husband has been coming home from work and grabbing the book from me, so we're fighting over it."
Tiffany & Bud T. Albuquerque, NM

"I've enjoyed your book. It's great. We have owner-built four times, and now I have my license. Our goal is to not have a mortgage. One more house. We build, move in, and sell. Once you get the first time under your belt, it's easier every time."
Debbie H. Decatur, AL

"We really like the ideas. We've been told by quite a few people that it's possible to save quite a bit of money, and now we are using the spreadsheet samples out of it, and we really like the book. We are using the spreadsheets to compare bids."
Mauri & Brock P. N. Ogden, UT

"I've read your book thoroughly. It is consistent with a lot of things I've heard, and I expect it will be a terrific reference. Yours is as good as Complete Guide to Contracting your Home, and the two books don't conflict with each other. They'll both be helpful. I was concerned about schedule, and both books give some good ideas. These two were the best of all the books in the library on this."
Ron W. La Jolla, CA

"I really appreciate the mission you are on with this book. It is a significant contribution to the welfare of plain ordinary folks to share the ideas you have. There's an element of dedication there."
Nathan B. Albany, NY

"I just got your book. I'm quite impressed with it. I like it. It's outstanding. I've purchased four books like Contracting Your Home, and all-encompassed, yours is the best book of the bunch. I've been happy with it."
Lon B. Harrison, MI

"I got your book from the library and I have to turn it in today, so I am getting my own copy. I know some people building houses now. I am going to tell them all to buy this book."
Louie M. Homer, GA

"You deserve to be told that this is a very good book."
Joe & Ruth M. Macon, GA

"I'm about half way through, so far so good, I want to use some of the budgeting techniques to start ahead of time. That way I'll know what it will cost before I begin. Big confidence builder so far."
Leon B. Amherstburg, ON

"It`s really great, I'm learning a lot, it's been a great help, very resourceful, the checklists and budget worksheets are great. Many things I didn't think of like installing a whole house fan."
Doris K. LaGrange, CA

"I devoured it! It came to me as a miracle, and I knew it was meant for me. Someone had put it on a table in the public library where I work to give away or throw away, because it wasn't hard cover, and I thought `Yes! Thank you!' I buzzed through that thing and you wouldn't believe the number of stickie notes I have coming out top and bottom. I believe that with basic intelligence you can contract your own home, if you can organize and deal with people. I think it was wonderful. If you send another one, I'll put it in the collection personally, but I'm not giving mine up."
Dorethy H. Topeka, KS

"It's wonderful. My husband and I read the book, and he is very excited about it. We think the work will be worth it. We'll get a house that we really want. This was the best one by far of the ten books I checked out of the library."
Kathryn & James H. Kansas City, MO

"Your book is a great source of enthusiasm and goforitism. I've gotten a lot out of that book."
Steve G. Layton, UT

"My wife thought I was nuts until she read your book, and now sees how it can be done."
Dan & Gwen P. Tucson, AZ

"I really liked it. I've been reading a lot. A lot of great ideas and food for thought things. I got it at the library, but I had to buy one because there were so many things I wanted to write down from it."
Lea R. Pickerington, OH

"I read your book and just loved it, and I have all these notes. It was wonderful."
Connie K. Plymouth, MN

"You have so many good things in your book, I'm in the process of building right now and am using your book to guide me through this process."
Rollie P. Tucson, AZ

"Excellent book. A lot of useful information a lot of people don't have. Very informative. As a contractor, I sat down with the book. At first I was wanting to toss it out the window. Either this guy is clueless, or he's been there before.' I finally realized that the realities of running your own project are right on target. Just because I'm a contractor doesn't mean that I know all the construction management techniques. We struggle to figure out how to run a business. We hear how to sell. And we find contractors that just slam dunk people, and we are trying to build a reputation for doing what's fair. I've laid my books open to people. Everyone talks about leveling the playing field, but that's difficult when there's no one to reinforce the certification of contractors. We find scabs out there who undercut the price but don't carry the insurance, the workmens' comp., and they're not above board. We often have to go out and clean up a bad mess. If people really want to level the playing field they have to reinforce the certification of contractors. Instead, l et's give everyone the information to be a true owner-builder. We're trying to run a square game. We try to make enough profits to stay in business for another day. We get slammed with high liability insurance, workers comp, and all the overhead. I'm all for people being fully informed. If someone had this information and had their project as well planned as it should be, it would be a joy to work for them. There would be very few problems. That does everybody a service."
Larry T. Santa Rosa, CA

"I have just finished reading your wonderful book! I thought it was so well written, and it felt like you were taking me through the whole experience of the process. I have built three homes, and it was so stressful. A big one, and two smaller ones. We found a design in Florida, courtyard design that we like, and want to build it in CA. I'm a certified interior designer. As the contractor, it will be my first time. I'm used to managing multimillion dollar projects. I appreciated your comments in the back of the book about other contracting books. My luxury home was very satisfying. We get the agree to disagree' part out of the way, and look at pictures that we both bring to our meetings about this, so we can see what the other is visualizing. We go on our yacht and listen to tapes on weekends. I wanted to tell you how very pleased I was with your book. It was so well represented, and organized, and gave it such a human side. I read it in two days, and highlighted and made notes for the project. I commend you on your achievement. Your sensibilities about the process and building the net worth. I could not put your book down. It was all I could do to stop. It moved you so comfortably from one process to another, and so sensibly."
Shirlee S. Walnut Creek, CA

"I've enjoyed reading it. Went to Durango, CO last weekend, and was downtown last Thursday night, and wandered into this bookstore, and picked up this book, and said `this looks interesting.' Read some that night, and just kept reading. Enjoyed it."
Ron B. Phoenix, AZ

"Excellent book, we're so glad you've done it. It's so easy to read and understand, it makes you feel like you can do it. We told all our neighbors about it and they started checking it out of the library. Now it's out constantly and we need a new copy for ourselves."
Kim & Jason W. Roosevelt, UT

"My business partner and I are both building homes, and we looked at a lot of books to help save money building. We chose yours and he bought it. Then I asked him to lend it to me, and he wouldn't let me keep it for longer than two days, so I had to have my own. It's just a good reference tool for someone who values their dollars."
Jeff J. Hammond, IN

"Your book is very inspirational, that's for sure."
Anders & Caroline B. Sandpoint, ID

"I really enjoyed the book. I read it in two days. It's something that if you are around the business you know these things, but it's nice to have in one location where you can review it. Like getting a minimum of three bids on every subcontractor. There are great ideas in here. It's a step by step guide on how to be successful."
Chandler C. Overland Park, KS

"I thought, this is real friendly. I said, I know I want to read this book.' I love this book, it's a great book."
Walter & Lee Ann S. Nevada City, CA

"I thought it was great. A lot of good information, I was really impressed."
Mike L. Belmont, CA

"It was fantastic. I'm an orthopedic surgeon. My occupation is well planned and orchestrated. I see the same in your book. It keeps you well planned and organized in terms of the surgery' you are about to undertake, building a house. I've ordered several books from Amazon, and this is by far the best one. I realize we are trading blood for sawdust here, but it comes down to the same thing."
Joe & Cindy M. Ball Ground, GA

"Book came highly recommended, and I've read it a couple of times now. I've got Contracting Your Home also. Your book is full of my notes now, it's like a textbook."
Susan C. Pittsfield, MA

"I was looking through a lot of books, and I took this one because it covered a lot and gave me the insights and misconceptions about building your own home. The software you have available is very handy. I was looking for tips and software tools, because they add value to the process. It's great that you've got the web site, too."
Ron D. Cortland, NY

"My husband is contractor and he thinks the book is great. We're really happy with it. The book is real helpful, it's something I can read instead of staying out of the picture. The book is so inspirational! We really feel we can do this. We called our first banker the other day and the conversation turned out to be almost word for word what you predict in the book."
Kathleen & Earl V. Oakland, CA

"There's some very good information in your book."
Doug & Heidi K. Tucson, AZ

"I saw it about a year ago and read it, and then looked at plan books. We'd like to build this year. I remembered liking it, then found the web site and saw it."
Linda & Curt M. Belleville, IL

"I wanted to thank you for your enjoyable book. Reading your book made me decide that this is something that I want to do. I am a little hesitant but with the books help I will be able to attack any part with confidence. I'm doing a good job getting subcontractors. I'm following your book as gospel. The book is really awesome. When people ask me why more folks don't do this, I say I think they're scared. My first bids were $250,000. That was $107 a foot. One of them told me, `You'll never going to build it for what you think.' We thought about this 2-3 years ago, and people talked us out of it, then I got your book at Barnes & Noble, and you tell it in a way people can understand in layman's terms. Ivealia D.

Orem, UT

Instead, let's give everyone the information to be a true owner-builder.

Mike L.

"A great book, out of this world, outstanding, unbelievable! I'll tell you how good I think it is: I wish I wrote it! Easy to read. Just great. I'm happy I bought it. "

Ed J. Stony Point, NY

"I really like it. I'm getting ready to build a house."

Oulay K. Wichita, KS

"We had two owner-builders near us. Neither of them listened to us or read your book. One had a contractor who quit the job when half-done. That guy went over by $70,000. That project was not planned at all in advance. The other owner-builder went $15,000 over."

Bart & Shery H. Hooper, UT

"I just received your second edition and am looking forward to reading it. I read the first edition cover to cover. I loved it.
Dean S. Chattanooga, TN

"Your wonderful book arrived a day or so ago and I want to thank you for it. We have had built for us a total of 5 houses and in each one I had a very active part in the planning, contracting, building, etc. so I am able to appreciate probably more than most the high value of your book. You and Elaine are performing a great service for many thousands of people who otherwise would never be able to afford a home of their own.
Ben G. Provo, UT

"Thank you for the copy of the Owner Builder Book that you sent me. My wife has already read the entire book and is excited to start building."

Doug B. Payson, UT

When I wear this copy out, I will order a new one.
Mike & Shannon C. Kansas City, MO

"The information is very valuable and realistic to the do-it-yourselfers like myself.
Julie J. Cincinnati, OH

"We appreciate the book. My husband read it real thoroughly and pointed out parts to me.
Ken & Phyllis P. Pocatello, ID

"I really liked your book, and I've started to get a feel for owner-building.
Virginia S. Fredericksburg, VA

Very interesting and informational.
Candy M.  Washington, DC

"I got it from the library, and I want it for myself now."

Patti C.  Salisbury, NC

This is the best book we've read and we've read quite a few.
Joanne & Jerry C. San Jose, CA

"It's excellent. Your book comes across so straight and forward, I have no problem understanding any of it. My husband and I have begun to feel like we can do this. Out of twenty books in the library, yours made the most sense. Those others are loaded with technical terms and are confusing.
Gloria & Matt G. South Jordan, UT

"Going through your features I realized you have a lot of good ideas, like putting a reading light over the tub - and I studied architecture in college. Your book makes a tremendous amount of sense.
Mark J.  Chandler, AZ

"I enjoyed the book quite a bit. It was really easy to get through. I enjoyed all the lists and worksheets. The other books are mostly overwhelming, with details I don't want to know.
Bryn & Mark G. Sisters, OR

This would help people that I meet frequently.
Don B. Bend, OR

"We are still in the design phase of our new home. I know your book will be a great benefit.
Marie C. Montgomery, AL

"My husband and I have been thinking (dreaming) of building for 3 years. We now own some beautiful property in the Thumb of Michigan and hope to makeour "dream" a reality later this year. Your book will be especially helpful as we start this venture - there sure are a lot of things to consider! Shelli G. Port Austin, MI

"The book is very interesting & surprisingly very relevant here in Canada. We are proceeding with building our house & will be contracting the whole thing.
Peter W. Cambridge, Ontario

Your description of how "lonely" it was to sit at the job site waiting for subs who did not show up really resonated. Nothing more discouraging and lonely is the right word. I also loved your punch list discription from Ohio and how that all worked out with over a 100 punch list items and how they just said forget it and keep the cash so you could do things yourself.
Nancy and Mark J. Winchendon, MA

"First let me say thank you for all the wonderful infomation I have found in your book. I am in the very early stages of finding a lot to build my family's dream home. I am finding that here in Southern California that you could be on one side of the street and build a home for $$$$ per square foot, literally cross the street and build at another price. (P.S. I absolutely love your sense of humor, I find myself grinning from ear to ear when reading your book).
Leon & Monique M. Carlsbad, CA

"Although I'm not building the house myself, your book has come in very handy to get discounts. I love your book, I think it's just phenomenal. I've read it six times. Each time I read I learn a little bit more. It is so marked up, it's unbelievable. Everybody should have this when they build a house or do removations.
Mel & Barbara W. Palo Alto, CA

My anticipated start date is next April.
Barry M. Willowick, OH

"This is a good book. Nice balance of detail with enthusiastic prose. Half of this battle is keeping yourself psyched up. That's what I like most about your book is keeping myself psyched up.
Sam W. Avondale, AZ

"My wife and I read your book with enthusiasm.
Jason C. Los Angeles, CA

"In all honesty, I've wanted to build a house since `91, and did a lot of waiting for people to help me, and then I found your book. I realized I could do it myself.
Barbara G. McKinleyville, CA

"It is an excellent book. Your spreadsheet templates are very helpful. Saves a lot of time.
Tom & Stephanie K. Bailey, CO

"I just finished reading through your book for the first time and I wanted to thank you. From most of the sources that we have consulted, we have been hearing about how difficult and expensive it will be to do this project. After reading your book, I have confidence that my wife and I will be able to build our dream house.
Jonathan H. Salt Lake City, UT

"Your book and software have been a great help so far in the project that I have undertaken, which is turning a 730 sq. foot tiny Spanish house, into a 1500 sq. foot custom home with all the charm of the original structure, plus more. I'm about one fourth of the way through the project but being that I have never done anything like this before, your book has been an excellent guide and source of information.
Charles D. Los Angeles, CA

"I'm enjoying your book very much. Good stuff.
Cliff T. Santa Fe, NM

"I enjoyed your book very much and you convinced me to build. The planning guides are especially helpful. You have a nice system set up, I have to commend you for that.
Steve & Sally C. Geronimo, TX

When we close on our home, our net worth is going to really kick up.
John & Julia M. Greensboro, NC

"I like how it's laid out. I'm one of those A.D.D.-type people, and the bold subtitles makes it easy to follow and readable.
John D. Columbus, OH

"I want to thank you so much for your most detailed and well planned book. I will use the book when we build our home. When we do I will certainly follow your detailed plan in designing a house that will work for us.
Lila P. Pocatello, ID

"Thank you! Thank you! Again, thank you!
Ann Wagner Hereford, AZ

"You have given us the right direction in your book.
Jason & Robin M. Charlotte, NC

"Read it twice. Had a lot of stuff in there I really enjoyed finding out about." Larry H., West Chester, OH

Richard & Marie R., Orem, UT

"I used some of the things you suggested when I had my house remodeled."
Nella V., Hant, MA

Chuck & Laura L., Providence, UT

Jim & Fran D., Helper, UT

"It is well organized book and the support you lend your points is very good. You've done a real good job with the book."

"I've read it twice and it's been helpful. Excellent book. We will build in the Spring. The book has allowed me to plan it room by room, and be aware of things that fit and buy them when they come on sale."
Don C., Nebo, KY

"The book was a great help to us. It kicked us in the rear. It also helped us when we went to the bank. Bankers are usually scared by log homes. The book gave us a game plan. The guy was kind of impressed. We had a step by step plan to show him. He has never bothered to come out and see. They were convinced by the way we came in."
Sharon & Tom S., Bradford, TN

"The book taught us a lot of things we didn't know. We did use a builder, but there was a lot we learned that helped us - financing, checking subs, etc. We had a lot of dogeared pages in book. I'm going to loan it to a friend."
Cora P., Orlando, FL

"It's a great little picker-upper, even if you are in the business."
Polly M., Winter Park, FL

"You spurred my husband on. We've started building. He's loving this, having a ball. He's become a real shopaholic for construction values, which he wasn't before. It's very satisfying to owner-build. It's fun beating everyone else's prices. I tell my 5-6 general contractor friends 'You guys need to shop!' but they say they just don't have time. The bigger they are, the less time they have to spend to get bids on things." Paul & MaryAnne D., Pleasant Grove, UT

"Wish we got your program before we started, and had it better planned out. We are finished building, and we love our house."
Grant & Pauline I., American Fork, UT

"We've been working on a house, it will be done in a couple of months in Woodland Hills. We appreciate your ideas that we used, it really helped out. Mary & Ron L., Sonoma, CA

"We enjoyed it immensely. It was a wonderful book. It was a great book."

Kathy D., Las Vegas, NV

"Very interesting book."
Susan D., Gurnee, IL

Don K., Naramata, BC

"I did enjoy your book. I told my sister who wants to build - read this book first."
Cindy C., Lake Charles, LA

"We read the whole thing. Last time we worked closely with the contractor. e could take it a step further next time and save some more money. Your stuff really finishes it out in terms of things to pay attention to and checklists. The next house we build will be where we retire to. We can do it every two years and keep building the wealth. It's really a great retirement job where you can make $50,000 a year tax free."
Cathy & Rodney W., Pensacola, FL

"Your book was real interesting. I read it and shared the book and tape with somebody else in the process of building. A group of them are going together and using the same subs and suppliers."
John W., Durham, NC

"I recommended it to 3-4 friends. I think it's a great service, and I'm a Realtor."
Steve W., St. Augustine, FL

"The book has been great."

"Your book was very very helpful. We have a plan check this week on our new house. Might break ground in November or March."
Jay B. Jr., Pacific Palisades, CA

Bettie & Leonard H., Rancho Cucamonga, CA

"My husband and I both read the book and we really like it. We have some property in the New Mexico mountains where we may build. If so we will use all of your ideas, because otherwise, it's expensive to build out there."
Vicki & Larry L., Heber Springs, AR

"We are drywalling our new house now. Book helped with terminology and setting a direction for our project. We had few voids after reading the book."
Larry S., Lincoln, MA

"It gave me an opportunity to sit down and do preliminary numbers. We are getting started in another three months. We are building two duplexes. I used some of your tips to get even better prices. They said to me, 'You must have done this before.' and gave me better prices."

David & Karen E., Pinnacle, NC

"I have referred a couple of other people to your book. I found the numbers at the beginning of the book very exciting. It's amazing that you can increase your net worth so dramatically. We will start building next Spring on the West coast of Florida."
Kim & Chris H., Springhill, FL

"We have recommended the book to others, it sure helped us a lot. A contractor told us our project looks like a half million dollar home. We are doing it for $200,000. Your book literally has changed my life. When we started, we went to three general contractors. My father-in-law set us up with a respected custom builder. He said, '2,300 per square foot. That would be $312,000.' He didn't even ask us any questions. I went on the web and found three different books and yours is the one. In the end we will spend about $200,000 for a home that has been described as a half million dollar house. Having started building our own custom home, I decided to go into business helping other people build their own quality energy efficient homes, acting as a consultant. There are a lot of people who will not take the time to do the research that we've done. We have to make it easy for them to do it, because people are hooked on immediate gratification. We now have a prime house on a prime piece of land."
Dave & Sheila Anderson, Boone, IA
"We have been planning our dream house for quite a while. I loved the book and marked it up with my notes."
Jo G., Clifton, VA

"Valuable book, very valuable."
Eric & Ember M., St. George, UT

"Very uplifting, things are possible. Really readable. Enjoyable. Lot of good information. I bought a lot of other books. They were more negative. User-friendly is the way for me. Not often where an information book and a you can do it book is an enjoyable read. I sat down and read it in two days. This is something I felt I could do."
Kimm F., Port Townsend, WA

"I went through it, underlined a bunch of stuff, page by page. I'm getting ready to build a house in Colorado in April, 2000. I'll definitely be using the stuff in here."
Bob W., Winston-Salem, NC

"Somebody who came in with no information at all could build with your book. It was interesting reading."

John B., Sparks, MD

"We got your book after we started building with a contractor. We know now that we should have done it your way. People should really get your book and use it."
Kathryn S., Germantown, TN

"Your book was extremely helpful. I'm going to break ground in the Spring."
Toni F., Carmel, CA

"We were in the process of finishing up a house, when we got your book. The book was excellent, and we have made suggestions to our builder to make his current project more saleable in the future. We are planning our next house two years hence. I liked the book a lot I have read it and am rereading it, and will make a checklist based on it."
James F., Petaluma, CA

Allan T., Bolingbrook, IL

"It was very good. We get married next month and then we'll build." Anthony & Karen N., Yonkers, NY

"I enjoyed your book. I'm in the process of applying everything now. I'm in the subflooring stage now. The worst thing I could have done was not taking your advice to spend enough time planning."
Craig M., Morganton, NC

"We just loved the book. My wife can't put it down."
Neil & Rebecca C., El Segundo, CA

"Right to the point, no fluff. Right on target. You reverberate with the 'Your Money or Your Life' concept."
Carole M., Las Vegas, NV

"It pointed out some things I should have done when I did build. One of the biggest things is the way the contract is written for the builder. We had a builder who left us in the lurch and went to Colorado. The book was true to form. When I go to build again, I am going to study that book."
George H., Belchertown, MA

"We already built, and I wished I had the book before that. It's a very helpful book. Our project was a study in frustration, and we wound up firing the builder."
Susan T., Longmont, CO
"My husband absolutely loved the book. He's very enthusiastic about your writing. You have some incredible ideas that don't occur to everybody. We're very grateful."

Kokila P., Union City, CA

"Book is quite informative."

Jim & Denise K., North Las Vegas, NV

"I built a house with your book. We start sheetrock tomorrow. It's beautiful, and I must thank you."
J.M. & Nancy B., Kirkland, WA

"I read the whole book and listened to the tape and it was great! It's a great book. I loved it. I recommended it to some people."
Lori G., East Brookfield, MA

"I ordered a 12 inch file of stuff to build a log home in Colorado. We lay the foundation this week. I used your book to develop all the detailed specs."
Gene W., Ft. Worth, TX

"I've read three or four of these owner-builder books, and yours is the best. It's very well written and very interesting to read."
Chris J., Park City, UT

"I'm very pleased with the book. It saved me making a lot of phone calls on information I needed. I'm almost ready with my right of ways for building. I'm glad somebody out there has done a book like this." Jason L., Honeoye, NY

"I got your book at our local library yesterday and stayed up all night reading it. I was so excited that first thing this morning I got up and spent the entire day putting our budget and schedule on Excel. My wife (Jenny) and I are just lining up the financing for our first Owner-Builder project and have experienced most of the nay-sayer "wisdom" you shared in your book. After reading it I'm convinced we can accomplish what we want to do and for much less than the local contractor's are saying. I already had three bids for septic design and had settled on a $925 bid from a reputable man in town. After reading your book I felt the need to get two more bids (for a total of five). I called two others today and the second person I found through a friend was also very reputable and quoted me $500 less. So, we've already saved $500. I also called two more building plan designers and confirmed I already had the best deal. All that to say thank you. It's a great book and my wife is currently half-way through and she can't put it down."
David & Jenny C., Gig Harbor, WA

"My friend Adrian in California told me not to do anything until I had read your book."
Robert B., Dunwoody, GA

"I got your book from the library, but I could only keep it for 2-3 weeks at a time. I needed a copy for myself. I appreciated such a good book. I'm glad to get a decent book that tells me the things I need to know and gives me steps I need to go through to get the job done."
Steve S., Green River, WY

"I took your book out of the library because my friend said it was a good one. Before I finished reading it, I had found the confidence to go out and build. We read the Special Reports to each other on the way back from Montana. We read all the ones that go to the budget and we broke it down to our parts where each of us get bids."
Melanie & Jeremy T., Riverton, UT

"My friend read the book before he built. His house appraised at $160,000 and he built it for $101,000, incl. land, a 1,700 s.f. house. The book really does help." Edmund M., Leander, TX

"It was really informative, and gave you a lot of detail, not just brushing over things. What steps to take, a good timeline. This breaks it down into a timeframe, good schedule tool."
J.R. & Janene C., West Valley, UT

"I enjoyed reading the excerpts for your book on the Web and decided I had to have it."
Dale & Terrilee L., Berthoud, CO

"It was easy to ready and I sat down and read it cover to cover."
Rosemary & Louie Grantham, Clinton, MS

"My Farm Bureau Agent loaned your book to me. He is building right now, and this is his Bible. It's just such a good book, we decided we needed to buy our own. My brother-in-law has done 6 or 7 houses and now he has a 4,000 square foot home on a PGA golf course. He does exactly what your book says."
Jon & DeJuana S., Woodworth, LA
