It took almost a year to get a C.O. but we made it. We are planning our next venture in two years. The house is beautiful and worth all the energy, sweat, struggle and joy!

Fall is in the air! After a sweltering summer here in Florida and in many other parts of the country, Fall is a welcome respite. We just finished caulking everything and painting the foundation. We also finished the fireplace and downstairs full bath (basement). We are planning to work on the house again in December, finishing up the little things (woodwork, crown molding, casings, touch up paint, finishing up staining the kitchen cabinets). Then we can have some fun skiing and walking in the woods. Life is quite an adventure!
The next house is planned for 2009 or 2010...

Hi, We are finally able to stay in the house and enjoy! It took almost a year to get a C.O. but we made it. We are planning our next venture in two years. WE still have to paint the crown molding and finish the fireplace. Next Spring we will do our landscaping and paint the foundation. The house is beautiful and worth all the energy, sweat, struggle and joy!

These pics are the latest, but not the greatest. Our digital camera has been in repair, so these pics were from a disposable. Anyway, I hope you can get some idea of where we are. The next trip we will have our digital back. Thanks.

Happy New Year! We are finishing up the details. WE have a deadline of April this year. What an amazing feat to finish a home of this size and quality doing much of the work ourselves in ONE YEAR!
Here are the latest pics of the kitchen. The granite was just installed last week and looks beautiful. We have a terrific source for that if you live in the Boone, Banner Elk, Blowing Rock area of NC. The kitchen needs the last cabinet in for oven and microwave, plus the dishwasher. You can see where the dishwasher will be where the wood post is holding up the granite. All this will be finished and cabinets stained (whitewashed with a chocolate glaze) by the end of February. The upper floors are getting bamboo flooring too beginning of February. Bathrooms tiled and plumbing fixtures in by end of February. Fireplace in by beginning of March and porch finished by then too. Washer/Dryer ready for the mud room soon. All details (crown molding) finished by March. We should meet our deadline with no problem at this point. WE are very grateful!

Great resource for cabinets: kitchencabinetdepot.com. I posted my comments and experience with this company elsewhere on this site. It is posted under "Granite Countertops."

This is the latest. Hardie Board siding installation has begun. Make sure to have help and sharp blades or you will have problems. Wear masks because there is dust when cutting. We are really coming along.

I found a few more pics from the summer. There are some good shots of the roof, ridge vent, etc. You can also see the front porch now and our pretty front door with leaded glass. We are going to paint the front door black and the shingles are sage green Hardyplank. Enjoy...

I am having trouble loading pictures in groups so will have to try a few at a time. We have come far in a few months despite rain, rain, rain. We work an average of two days a week and have finished the roof shingles, and are working on the siding. All rough utilities are in, waiting for inspection to install interior insulation then sheetrock and taping. After that painting, wood floors, cabinets, fireplace (gas), appliances and finished utilities hopefully by mid-December. We have done most of the work ourselves with some great helpers with the exception of foundation, garage doors, utilities and drywall. We are having a ball in the process despite some frustrations. Having experience building is a must, though. Or having friends that have experience at least... Here come the pics. Hope you enjoy them at Powder Horn Mountain, NC. Remember to have cases of water and Gatorade-type drinks. The hard labor causes you to lose electrolytes which can cause cramping up and dangerous situations, especially on ladders and roofs. We couldn't keep enough on hand for the helpers. And feed them well.

The second week the rain stopped with the exception of late afternoon rain. We would start at 7 am and usually stop by 4. Sometimes we went back to the site after the rain and worked for a couple of hours.

This file contains pictures of the two weeks we spent erecting the beginning of our new home. The first three days it poured, and we managed to make up for at least one day within this two-week time span. Once we got going, it was fun and amazing to watch the results. You definitely should have at least four strong people at all times, five or six would be ideal for safety and efficiency.

The open-panel home came with housewrap, but not insulation. The windows were delivered separately in the next delivery three days after the first. The material was beautiful - top shelf. There were very few errors in the structure. One thing we learned: The trucks are long and we had to figure out how to deliver the material to the site. Our roads are narrow in our community. We were very grateful to all friends who had trucks and strength to help us unload in the designated time frame of six hours per day, per delivery.
