I am just beginning the research to see if I can be an owner-builder and am really glad I found The Owner-Builder Book and the website.

We have been waiting for the electric rough-in for two weeks. Plumbing, HVAC, fireplace and roof are finished. All inspections should be done next week ready for insulation. All is going well. We drove 8 hrs last weekend to the Kraftmaid warehouse, got about half of what we need. One more trip and we will buy the rest from the local store.

The picutre looks beautiful what a view.

May I ask how big is your kitchen and how many cabinets did you buy. What did it cost you?

Thanks Lori

Lori, The kitchen is fairly large with approx. 30 feet of cabinets. We'll need about 32 cabinets total. Our trip to Kraftmaid netted about half of that with a cost to us of $2300 which I priced at Home Depot for $5200. We're making another trip in Jan.   Stan

Hi Stan,

Would you mind posting the square footage of your house and a floor plan?  It sure looks nice so far.  Don't worry, I'm not interested in stealing your plan. ;-)  We're already under way (on the stem wall) of our own.  I'm just interested how you used your space on the main floor.

Thanks,

Kristen

Kristen, Our house is a Stephen Fuller (#141 on his site) 2902 sq. ft.. We are building on a crawl space but we reversed the stairs in the attic where we have an other 1500 sq. ft. unfinished.   Hope your home is going well.  Stan

Your house looks very nice. If you don't mind me asking, what kind of framing costs did you run into with your roof? My wife and I are in the planning stages of a house with a similar roof line (although smaller). We've talked to a couple of builders and they have all told us that the framing for the roof is going to be very expensive. Thanks!

Nick, Maybe we were very lucky but I think we did will. The house has a little over 2900 sq. ft. and some unusual ceilings, 9' to 11' tray in master bedroom, 15' tray in living room, 17' den and a 22' dining room. About 1500 sq. ft. usable footage in the attic (unfinished). The lumber package was about $26000 in the dry (no shingles) and the framer charged me $5.00 a sq. ft. including the garage( about 3350 sq. ft. total).  That did not include placing 32 windows and 3 exterior doors which was about $1500. The framer dried this in 8-9 days. If we can be any help don't hesitate. We ask for a lot of help about we started.   Stan
