Thanks so much for such a great book and great website. I really don’t think we could do this without them. My husband and I were talking about how we wished we had read the book 10 years ago and could now be building our “dream” (i.e. final) home with little or no mortgage! C’est la vie. I am teaching my girls about the “step-up” plan (they are 8 and 11!) and, if the law doesn’t change, I will encourage them to use your book to build up to their final home mortgage-free!

that understanding how a jurisdiction operates is one of the most frustrating things?! Yes I believe I have in either the Barrel Race or Mutton busting blogs.  Well it is borne out again.  I head down to Santa Fe, drawings and checkbook in tow to get the trade permits today.  Now in Houston and Nashville, all you did was a rough sketch of the electrical, wait I couldn't do electrical in Houston, so the electrician didn't even do a sketch for a permit.  In Nashville I did.  Nothing for plumbing or mechanical.  And I walked out with permits.  But for good measure I did do drawings on everything here.  I walk in and they say "we need two sets and we have to review them, and that will take several days, depending on when the inspector is in and then we'll keep one set on file and give you one for the job site". What?! Weird. So I trudge to Kinko's and make another set, and buy another set of colored markers and two hours later, I head back and turn everything in. Now I have no idea of how they are going to contact me to let me know when I can pick up the permits. The fellow didn't take my address, and my giving him my phone number was like an afterthought.  I'll call Wednesday and see where things stand.  I would have much rathered to talk in person to the guys.

Excavator did get started today.  Built a ramp so he can get to the upper section and basically dug out the back filled area from where the old fuhrerbunker was.  Got some material up to the upper section, dug out a few stumps, but that was as far as they got today.  He has to finish a job tomorrow but will be back Wednesday to actually start digging rock.

earth ramp to get up to the upper section. We'll leave it or part of it as a walking access when the house is finished. But will put stone steps within it.
top of the lot slopeside. We need to build up and level it. He's started a couple of piles.
From this angle, it look like a lot was done, but, less than I would have thought. Although he was finding rebar and some concrete in the old filled area, it looks like the soil there will be suitable for putting it the foundation when recompacted.
