I just finished reading The Owner-Builder Book and it has lit a fire. Now comes the hard work of maintaining the flames of excitement while the project begins.

While working on cutting, staining, and installing thresholds around the house I've had much occasion to go in and out of the main utility room quite a bit.  It eventually bugged me how warm it was in there and I realized what the reason was of course--all of those radiant heat manifolds and the hot water tank were just throwing off heat from the boiler.

So I took a few days off from the threshold work to put install some insulation on things.  The pipe insulation was pretty easy, it just required several trips to Home Depot.  Turned out that I have three sizes of pipes in there--the big 1" jobs to ferry fluid to/from the boiler, 3/4" pipes on the manifolds, and then the 1/2" PEx to route the heat to all of the various zones.  Looking at the various stores (both Home Depot and Wal Mart) I didn't really find much different in capability or price between what was at the two stores, but since Home Depot was closer I used their product.

As one might expect there was much cutting of the insulation to length as I did all of this, and I had some problems with the brackets attaching the piping to the wall--the insulation wasn't really designed to fit around that.  But I got n early everything all sheathed up pretty nicely.

Next up was the hot water tank.  The good bit is that it's basically just a big tank of hot water, so I didn't have to deal with letting gas burners breathe or anything.  I did have a bit of trouble locating inulation that would fit it my tank though--it's pretty wide and none of the standard hot water heater insulating blankets would actually fit.  I eventually bought two sheets and used a lot of metallic tape (they came with plenty) to fasten it all together.

This should all make a real difference to that room and overall propane use should decrease another notch.  A goodly upgrade indeed.

The hot water tank all nicely swathed in insulation.
The main mainfold breakouts. I can't do anything about the lines after they go up into the walls, but at least this part is insulated.
