Those of you who are around my age surely remember that song. A couple posts ago, I mentioned that while working on sheathing the floor downstairs, the place was becoming cleaner and I felt I wasn't in a coal mine anymore. Well that was then, on the first floor. Started this weekend on the second floor, and although we had cleaned the floors up there, it's back in the coal mine again. We're reconfiguring the upstairs, moving walls, removing walls, taking down the rest of the old collar ties. All the dust and soot that is on the top of the wall, hanging on the rough-sawn rafters, all comes down when disturbed. A real mess. But - the space is turning out very well.

While Sandra had come come up with a couple different layouts for the space over the past few months. Neither of them fully solve all the design challenges. With the dormers, the exit to the upper deck, a seven foot poster bed with sloping walls from the roof line conspired to make serious compromises necessary. We spent a couple hours Saturday going through everything again. I was getting worn out, frustrated, as it was holding me up from doing any work. But it was worth it, between the two of us, we looked past the existing walls, and finally came up with a layout that works, and works rather well. It was two hours well spent, and afterwards we started tearing down and rebuilding. Should be able to finish most next weekend. There is a lot of detailing as I plan on cutting out several key supports that I need to replace with support in a different manner. But that can wait. Todd is back from a month road trip and he and I can start running electrical and plumbing now we know where things are going, so he can learn those trades and of course get them along.

With the new wall going in, you can see the difference in the wall heights between the new and old. The couple old walls that remain will be extended to the full height.
