My husband Aaron and I have been clipping and bookmarking pages of homes and ideas magazines since we first got married in 2001. We have known all along that we would eventually move back to the family farm and build our dream home.
Four years ago we met with a friend of the family who is a home designer. He helped us to see that we were no where near ready to build our final home. So I spent the next few years studying online and any books I could get my hands. Over the last year I have been drawing many plans. By drawing all these plans we have been able to really think through what we want in each room, the size we want each room to be, and the architectural detail.
Over the last month, I have been researching lending companies. I have looked into construction lenders online, local banks and so on. I have found a local bank that I can trust and that has a program that I like. Now I know how to start the major planning.
Last Saturday we met with our home designer. We walked off the land that we picked to build on. Then we came back to our current home and went over our book of ideas and told him exactly what we want. Our budget is still limited, so he is going to give us some ideas on how to build the home in stages and have it all planned out from the start.
In the meantime, we will be getting the land surveyed and deeded over to us, working on our line-item budget, and gathering recommendations for subcontractors.
