So, I am on my 8th book so far... Reading about getting my plans engineered. I plan on using advanced framing to build this house. Has anyone done this? Did you see a good bit of cost savings in the lumber purchase? Was it difficult to find a framer who was knowledgeable? When you had the house engineered, did he/she change the requirements for your foundation?
I am reading so many ways to cut costs by hiring an engineer, just wondering who out there has done it, and did the fee for hiring them pay for itself?

So... My first journal entry. We are going to build an Old World European-style home. However, the developer will not allow an Owner-Builder since we will be one of the first homes going in. That being said, we are going the UBuildIt route, with one of the preferred builders in the neighborhood. I don't know of any way around this, and to be honest since this our first owner-builder, I am fine with it. The 7% fee is a little hefty, but I am chalking this up as experience for the next build we do.
As of now I have the floorplans, and am shopping them around to various contractors. We built a custom home about two years ago, and I still have the contacts from this house. I've found the more I contact people, the more references I receive for other trades... So far, it's been a fun and eye-opening experience. I have received a couple quotes from builders and the price difference makes me sick to my stomach. I would hate to know what I could have built the house I am in now for, if I did it on my own...
