I really, really like The Owner-Builder Book (not to mention the amazing website) for a variety of reasons, but mostly because it gives people information they need and the confidence that they can build their own custom home.  Experts in all fields try to convince us that they have an informational advantage and use it to play on our fears, make us feel incompetent, cheap or even stupid.

Seeking roofer advice

Building a modern house in Elmhurst, Il.  We bought the property a year ago.  I am using an architect from the city.  I have not decided whether to GC myself or get a builder.  We went out with an initial set of preliminary drawings to some builders and realized that we are way over budget. My architect basically started from scratch with a second set.  The second set brings the house to 2,700 square feet.  We are still not at a preliminary pricing stage for the second set of drawings.  We are stuck on the design of the roof.  I am trying to balance the reality of a Chicago winter with a modern look. 

I need to bring in a roofer sooner or later.  I am seeking some roofer opinions.  If any one has any recommendations for a roofer, please let me know.  I have attached some sketches of the house.
