New House Plans

We have had a change of heart.  After nearly two years of studying and playing with one set of house plans, we decided it just didn't fit the surroundings.  I guess the silver lining in this is that I learned how to use Google SketchUp.  Once we both agreed that a more traditional Southern/Acadian style house with a wrap-around porch would feel and look better on our spread, the search was back on.  I think we have nailed it this time.  I have already contacted the designer for some foundation changes and am looking into SIPs.  I am very curious if the price levels out once you factor in lumber and insulation for typical builds.


On another note, we really wanted to start clearing out the trees for the proposed house location.  Unfortunately, I forgot to mark the trees I wanted to keep during the fall and I have to now identify them by their markings versus the leaves.  I didn't realize dendrology was in my future when we decided to boot city life for country life.  The lessons never end.

We bought just over 42 acres of land in Clinton, LA in June, 2008.  We moved our entire family (all six of us) into a small two-bedroom trailer on the property while we dream, plan, build.  Now that we have over a year behind us, we know where we want our dream home to be and are officially starting the planning stages.

We want to do a non-traditional (for America, at least) pole house designed by John Koche out of Australia. The first hurdle is getting over the metric/imperial conversions.  He'll do most of the conversions for us.  My biggest fear is that we'll spend all this time and money doing plans only to have them rejected.  We picked out a basic design and have started playing with room dimensions, layout, etc.

We are running into the big Baton Rouge today to pick up "The Book" and possibly a few others to make this really official.  We've poured over the Internet and spent countless hours reading forums such as found on this site.  It's time to move it up a notch with books.

We are hopefully two years out from groundbreaking.
